my auto hubs keep failing to disengage, and i want to have manual hubs. what kind of trouble am i looking at to switch them out. how long would it take and any problems like adapter kits needed? which hubs are decent hubs and what am i looking at to spend. thanks alot for your help

swapping auto to manual hubs is pretty easy. I personally run and like Warn Premium locking hubs. They have taken a beating from me and still work fine. They also have a lifetime warranty should you break one.

The swap process is pretty easy with fairly simple tooling.

1. Remove auto hub cover
2. Remove snapring on axle shaft
3. Remove snapring from wheel hub that hold the locking hub body in
4. Remove hub body
5. Remove axle snapring behind hub
6. Slide in new manual hub body
7. Install wheel hub snapring
8. Install axleshaft snapring
9. Install manual locking hub dial
10. Drink Beer if you weren't drinking during the process of swapping hubs.

The hub dials are usually held on with torx or hex screws. A set of snapring plyers are very useful along for the axleshaft snaprings. A set of small dental style picks or eyeglass screwdrivers is great to get the wheel hub snapring out. The wheelhub snapring is hard to see. It is just a small wirelike ring that clips in a little groove on the inside of the wheel hub. Once you get both snaprings out you take one or two of the dial bolts and thread it into the hub body to help pull it out with.

Only use a LITTLE grease on the new hubs when you install them. Just a dab here and there is plenty.

It took me around 1 1/2 hours to swap mine out, and I had never done it before. I've got the warn premiums also.

thanks for the help! thats what i needed to know, the way i can tell its not disengaging is it makes a really loud t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t when you drive in 2h with one still locked, and your driveshaft turns. thanks again for the info. much appreciated

The driveshaft does turn some during normal driving in 2wd. It doesn't turn as fast as the rear shaft though. It turns from parasytic drag. The front shaft will spin slowly under most conditions. If it is spinning full speed then a hub is not dissengaging.
