So I've posted before about my plans to swap my 700r4 for a SM465. But I'm wondering how much of a PITA it may be because I'm pulling parts from a 76 Jimmy for my 85.

One, does this raise any alarms? I don't think that's supposed to be chipped off lookin'

Also, does my 85 have every mounting place needed for the clutch pedal/zbar, since in 85 is when they went to hydro clutch correct? I have a whole parts truck, but I mean the mounting locations of the zbar, the large spring behind the dash.

On the other note, should I just try to get a rebuild kit for my valve body on my 700r4. I want to use the carb from this truck, but I don't know if I can. Number is 7045583. I'm looking at the TV made easy kits. Also the I guess heat riser style choke bolts to where my EGR would be correct? It's a performer rpm intake manifold, with the EGR block off plate bolted on.

I'm confuzzled. I was planning on finally dropping the transmissions this weekend (or perhaps next weekend cause I have tickets to the NHRA northwest nats :D) but before I go that far I need a solid plan. Don't know my best, or easiest route to take.

First, the shift tower on that trans is broke. The chunk that's missing has a dowl pin (just like the opposite side) to hold the shifter in place. I imagine with that pin missing at best the lever will feel sloppy but maybe move around enough to bind up.

Being an 85, your truck will not have any of the z-bar brackets and the clutch pedal dash bracket is different from the early mechanical style pedal. The good news is most of the parts from the donor will bolt right in to the 85. The only thing I'm not sure about is the pivot bracket on the frame, your truck may not be predrilled for it so that could be a PITA to do.

You don't HAVE to go hydro. If you have a doner truck, then everything is laid out for you as to what goes where. As for the carb, what's wrong with the one on your 85/

Ya I noticed the otherside was nice and looked around to the other side and saw the chunk missing. It does like to get 'stuck' and then you gotta F with it to put it back in gear. I know it wouldn't have any of the brackets, what I was worried about was the mounting hole locations, I can eyeball where the rod goes through the floor since it wouldn't be perforated, or whatever, but all the dash stuff, that's too many locations to measure and screw up.

Anyone have thoughts on using that carb with a 700r4? I hate the edelcrap I have now. Never had anything but an electric choke, so I'd have to get info on that style choke it has.

I've never had any issues with the heat stove chokes. Stick that manual in there and forget about the 700r- my. 02. Like I said, the diner truck showed you where everything goes. Pull out a tape measure if needed and don't be afraid to drill holes

I'm not, I am however weary about the SM465 itself. The manual clutch system is a last resort, I would just 'like' a hydro clutch, but it would all depend if parts are easy to find/cheap. Few junk yards around here. I'm not keen on putting in a broken transmission, broken innerds are one thing, broken cast body on the other hand... if I had that missing chunk I wouldn't mind attempting to weld it, even if the body is cast.

Oh the carb... I just dislike edelbrocks. I enjoy the drivability and economy q-jets offer, I personally can't seem to get that with an edelbrock.

nvmd about the 700r4 stuff, did some lookin' online and re-remembered all the reasons why I'm getting rid of it, no controll for the lock up, brackets.... nah, I'm good.

Any ideas for repairing that missing chunk? Still leaning on ditching the manual clutch system and scouting out hydro set ups.

get the 30 buck master at auto zone and a hose from them i think will be the easiest way to get the hydro clutch without pulling out the trans again though
