:confused:I recently converted my 89 with 700/241 to 465/205 and I'm having a problem with the wiring to get it to run. I'm told I need to bypass the park wires so it'll crank but I don't know which wires are the correct ones underneath the steering column.

I thought these were the correct wires and I cut the top 2 in the picture and tied them together, but that's not them. Anybody know the correct wires?

white half round switch at bottom section of steering colum has 2 sets of 2 wires on it. 2 do the park/nutral and 2 do backup.

the ones in your hand look to be the ignition switch or wiper stuff. go down the colum a bit more and it faces up in to the dash so you dont kick them with your feet.

And don't cut anything until you are sure this time! :)

Thick Purple and Yellow wires are your neutral start wiring. Should be able to jumper those two (to test before cutting!) and have it fire up.

Up to you if you want to put a clutch switch in there, I didn't, and it saved my back once (you can move the vehicle with just the starter even if the engine doesn't run) but don't forget the negatives...a bit scary to hit the key when the nose of the truck is against another vehicle and you forget the clutch. :)

I'm color blind :D so I think I got the right wires. Found the 2 plugs at the base of the column and the yellow/ black wires do the back up lights. So I assume blueish/purpleish and yellowish/orangish are the park neutral. The plug-ins are on the top left of the steering column at the base.

That didn't work!! Same thing happens when I try to crank it. all gauge lights and gauge function go out completely. Back up lights won't work, but the interior light and headlights will come on. Have to disconnect battery and let it sit for a second for everything to reset, I guess, then everything will come back on. Try to crank it again and everything cuts out. The ignition quits doing the beeeeeepppp as well :D.

Anybody got a clue? Checked all the fuses and they are perfectly fine???? HELP

Note: the wires I cut this time are actually the ones I'm holding with my ring finger in the picture. The black and yellowish ones are the back up lights so shouldn't the others be park/neutral

See above.

The P/N wires come off the sliding half moon switch at the base of the column against the firewall.

You need to check voltage on those two while working the switch to make sure they are the right ones, although I don't believe GM changed the wiring colors. They are NOT going to be small gauge wires like in your fingers in the pic, as they feed ignition power.

If you look in the loom just above your hand in the picture you'll see a 12 gauge yellow and a 12 gauge purple wires, those are the ones you are after.

If the shifter on the column is in park the engine should start just fine. I'm a little confused as to why you're having this problem. Is the purple wire connected to the starter correctly? it should go to the inside terminal. Are all the red wires connected to the starter properly connected and the fusible links intact? Is the battery fully charged and cables in good condition?

The gauges should go full sweep and the warning indicators should light while cranking.

My shifter is in park on the column and I was kind of thinking the same thing. The battery is fully charged and on a float charger. I'll check the starter wires whenever it quits raining for a little bit. This F**KING rain has been going on for days and is supposed to last another week, it's getting really annoying:mad: (Damn tropical storm). BUT anyway I haven't moved any wires that I know of and it almost feels like it's a bad ground. If been going around wiggling wires and checking bolts, but to no avail just yet. I thought those might be the wires but from what everybody said they're in a plug-in. The starter is the only wires I haven't checked. Maybe that's it:D:o

:bow:you were right BigBlock72. I checked the starter wires and evidently I caught a couple wires in between the bellhousing of the 465 and the engine block when I bolted it up. Both of them were all chewed up when I finally got them out. Cut one and heat shrinked it and taped up the other one. Went to crank the truck and it started up like a charm:D Then the bottom fell out again and had to shut it off and run inside, but thanks again BigBlock. It's always the simple things:wink1::o

Glad it was so simple:wink1:.

I know I've pinched my fair share of wires in bellhousings and crossmebers.:o
