Hey all, how hard would it be to swap a TH400/NP208 out and put in a Muncie 4sp./NP205 and what all would i need found the set for very cheap and im just wondering how long it would take and what kind of fabbing i would have to do, keep in mind this will be going on a CUCV with an 8in lift, and most likely a 4in reverse shackle lift, this is a going to be a summer project if do able in a timely manner!

Simple. The worst part is mounting the clutch pedals under the dash. Are you planning on a hydraulic clutch, or a mechanical linkage?

Marti

You will need, clutch pedals, linkage if mech clutch. Bellhousing, flywheel for whatever motor you have, clutch, pilot bushing, throwout bearing, tranny, shifter, t-case, shifter, front shaft should be the same, depends what year your 205 is. Rear shaft will need to be lengthened.

You could use the auto column, but then would have base sticking out where the auto shifter would be.

It's not too hard, I did it to my truck in a day. Oh and don't forget crossmembers.

crossmembers are the same. the position might change a little, you might need to drill new holes in the frame if they arent there already.

very simple swap, these trucks are like legos. First one I did took a weekend, most recent one took 6 hrs.

I had to swap out crossmembers, but I went from a 700/208 to a 465/205 from an 86. So maybe that is why I needed to change. I think the 205 dropped down more than the 208, with the stock flat crossmember, the front output hit the crossmember.

:doah: doh, your right.

the slipyolk Tcases had that w crossmember. its been so long since ive messed with a aluminum case, I had forgotten.

Front shaft is not the same FYI. The front shaft from a 700r4 truck is a few inches longer than a sm465 or 3 speed auto truck. Although with the lift you might be dead on. Stock vrs stock though it needs to be trimmed.

Nope. My truck with the 305/700/208 had the same front driveshaft as the donor 465/208. I thought that the 465/208 would be longer, maybe swap that in so at least have 4wd. Put them side by side, same thing.

Saginaw-Muncie, I'm guessing it was a bit of a collaboration at the time...:dunno:

I've seen the full swap (column and all) done in one day by one person! But, that is with ALL the parts accumulated beforehand (donor rig).

If his was any indication, the pedal box for the manual bolts right in. Gotta get the hydraulic setup too, if going with a hydro clutch.

Incorrect. I have done a souple of these swaps. There was not enough difference in length to require retubing. I used the front driveshaft from my 1988 V10 Suburban that was a 350TBI/TH700R4/NP208 when I swapped in an SM465/NP208 from a 1985 K10.I also used the driveshaft in a 1985 K10 that was an OEM 350/TH700R4/NP208, and had been swapped to a 400/TH350/adapter/NP208, when I swapped in an SM465/NP208 out of a 1982 K10.Martin
