Auto tranny lines

I noticed in this 88 K5 I got that there is some sort of in-line filter on one of the tranny lines? Anyone ever see anything like this?

Yup, had an inline on one of my old trucks. It actually came with the rebuilt tranny I put in.

So its not a factory thing, its a PO add-on then?

According to BTO, when installing a new tranny of theirs, they recommend installing a filter in the return line to the tranny after the cooler. THey also recommend removing it after 100 to 150 mi. At least that was in their installation manual. Hope that is what you were asking about.

I would guess that it is after market.

I was just curious as to what the hell it was and if its necessary. Don't know how long its been there either.
