How is the fricton material held onto the steel so well, that the friction material will burn off long before the adhesive breaks or whatever it is between the steel and the friction material on a friction disc?

or is it one of those "why is the sky blue? how does a posi trac rear end ina plymouth work? why are boobs good? nobody knows it just does." kinda things?:dunno:

The friction material is a fiber similar to paper and it is held to the steels with an adhesive. Part of the reason water contamination will ruin an auto.

Steel and most fibrous materials are relatively easy to adhere to and get a bond strength at least as strong as the materials themselves. The friction material is actually pretty soft so it doesn't take much to exceed its strength. When you increase the number of clutches, you reduce the stress and they really don't experience as much as you would think.

The clutches are bonded to the friction by compressing the friction and steel together under very high load and heating the two parts till the adhesive sets. The adhesive comes applied to the friction material and we activate ours with MEK to stick it to the steel surface before bonding in the oven.

Okay I'll ask, what is MEK?

So yall make clutches in house.

it's also reducer for gelcoat..... nasty stuff....

thanks for the info guys, something I was always curious about.
Heck, thats nothing. I even know how they make Teflon, which nothing sticks to, stick to a pan.
And which Bumblebee, white-face or black-face will sting you........
