So i had a really cool idea today. I have a tach with a shift light on it that i don't use seeing that i have an automatic. I use the tach for engine monitoring and stuff like that.

I just ordered some electric cutouts and i was thinking about wiring the power from my shift light to a relay to open up the cutouts at whatever RPM i want! set it at about 2800 or so for when i really stomp it to overtake someone.

Just thought i would share my little idea with everyone. =]

that might actually be pretty cool, would be alot of fun for passing or in tunnels.

I would wire up a way to disable it or allow manual control, a three position toggle or something like that.

idk man sounds like a cool idea but electric cut out dont open real fast, they would be opening and closing all the time

I was thinking a one way diode so i can manually turn it on, and if i want it to stay off i just turn the "shift point" up on the tach.

I might put a switch in series with the relay if i have problems with it.

I was planning to wire mine to a microswitch on the throttle pedal.

Anything more than maybe 3/4 throttle and it opens up automatically.

A second switch on the dash would have a total of three positions:

Closed - Never open the cutouts regardless of throttle postion
Auto - Open cutouts based on throttle position (as described above)
Open - Always open. Good setting as an anti-theft device. Shut off the engine, then switch to this position to insure that anyone starting the truck is going to get noticed!

I like that idea Greg, unfortunately in this state if a cop notices you have exhaust cut-outs he can impound the vehicle and it will take 30 days before you can get it back (assuming you can afford the impound and tow fee which is usually around 1300.00) and that is AFTER you pay for the police release down town with your "friendly" officers.

Sounds like California all right....

Gonna be hard to notice mine behind an enormous flat skidplate anyway.

Neat idea.

I have electric cutouts on my '79 malibu. They are always entertaining as hell. The looks on people's faces are funny as hell. Its scared a couple cars away though also.

They take 7 seconds to full open.

I've thought about them on a k5, but water stopped me from doing it.
As long as you didnt try to open them after passing through water you'd be okay, but I think if they was water in the motor, and you hit the switch, it would short out.

The cut outs I have experience don't work like that, they are variable. They have a 3-position momentary switch, so you hold the switch until they are open/closed as much as you want. They don't automatically close when the power turns off, they just stay where they are.

They work just like the electric tailgate window on a K5 or Burb.

Wow first time ive heard that!! Me and a few buddies have been pulled over for no exhaust before and didnt get more than the loud exhaust ticket/

Whitney used to sell some cable operated ones. I never saw one, but it seems to me that it should be easy to mount a spring loaded solenoid so that it pulls where the cable hooks on.

Hit the switch, bang its open, kill the switch, and the spring snaps it shut.
