Automatic to manual help

So, to confirm. Obtain flywheel and pilot bearing for the 454 year/model and clutch kit for year of the sm465? Seems I remember reading about some issue with pilot bearing in these engines converting from an automatic???

That is correct. Get the pilot bearing that matches the engine, so you don't have any issues with fitment. The truck transmissions all have a 0.51" pilot diameter, but the flywheels are not all the same. If you order a pilot bearing for a 2005 Silverado, for example, it will fit the shaft of a 1978 SM465. But it won't fit into that truck's flywheel.

Just like @campfire just said...pilot bearing and flywheel for your motor, then fitment of the pilot bearing in the motor is not an issue...and the stub nose of the input shaft of the tranny's were all the same...even GM NV4500's in the 90's have the same size stub nose on the input shaft as the old SM465's., so the tranny will fit that pilot bearing just fine. And then get a clutch kit/pack for your year tranny and it'll bolt up to the flywheel you get just fine. Then you're good to go. Pretty simple really

I should add that the example above isn't hypothetical. I accidentally ordered a 2005 pilot bearing to go with my 2005 NV3500 clutch slave. And then turned around and ordered another pilot bearing that fits my actual 1986-series flywheel.

haha, we've all had our share of :doah:moments during our builds...I know I've had my share of moments of opening up a freshly ordered part and realizing it's wrong...such is life, haha

The outside diameter is large enough that I caught the error before I opened the bag.

Of course...it's been sitting so long that I can no longer return it.

Ok. I looked up the parts and there is option for 11" or 12" flywheel and clutch. Either should fit, right?

On an older K5 I converted to a SM465, (a '72)--you could bolt up either an 11" or 12" clutch to the flywheel, but I had the old style cast iron bell housing ,so both fit without clearance issues--on the later aluminum bell housings there may be ones that only accept an 11" clutch, and another version for the 12" clutch..not sure about anything later than 87 or so,I only have had older trucks..

My 1986 bell housing had no problem fitting a 12" clutch.
