Ok lets just say a th350 cuz thas what I have.

I was wondering if a lock up converter could be used on it.

AND does that essentually make a solid conection like a clutch would in a manual trans?

lets say it has a full manual VB would a guy be able to drop it into first gear, lock the converter and have compression braking on a steep desent?
Or does a lock up converter not work the way I am thinking? Do they work at low speeds?

Also is there a differnce in a trans when used with a diesel since they have a lower redline? or would it matter with a manual VB?

I am still going with a manual behind my 6.2 but I was just curious about this stuff.

Quick answer is yes BUT you must start with a TH350 that used the lock-up convertor. The convertor will not lock up in 1st gear and i'm pretty sure on a TH350 that it won't lock up in 2nd gear either only 3rd. The convertor will unlock once you hit the brakes though and with it only locking in 3rd gear it's very doubtful that you'll be able to get any compression braking but this is all with a FACTORY set-up.

Now if you were to wire the convertor clutch to a switch that you have full control over then it's a possibilty to do what you want but if you forget to unlock the convertor when the speed gets slow enough it will kill the engine just like trying to stop with a manual without pushing in the clutch. Also setting it up manually does give you an advantage when towing as you can hold a given RPM as long as you need, basically you turn a 3 speed auto into a 6 speed auto trans that is being manually controlled.
