Got a tranny temp gauge to install and it didn't come with the adapter http://www.autometer.com/cat_accessoriesdetail.aspx?vid=66 . Sounds like my probe is 5/8"-18 UNF. I plan on welding in a bung into my tranny pan to install it. I could get one of these to make it easy http://www.autometer.com/cat_accessoriesdetail.aspx?vid=64 but I want to install it tomorrow for a run on new years day and prob can't get one in time. Can I just get a 5/8 fine thread nut and weld to my pan and install or is that adapter something special?

i just went to a shop that makes hoses and stuff like that and got it there cost me 2 bucks.

does it need to bottom out to seal?

I have to do the same thing and just looking at my sender, it's on a pipe thread. No need to bottom out.

If you have a place that sells steel fittings for pipe, you can get a steel female pipe fitting and make it work.

Could very easily be a flare fitting though, That would definitely need to bottom out.

says its just 5/8 unf thread, isn't that normal fine thread?
The adapter that I am missing converts it to pipe and if I had it I would get a metal bung of sorts and weld into pan.

I'd say that's normal fine thread. Wonder how that is intended to seal.....

well talked to a guy tonight, said it seals by bottoming out on the temp probe and the adapter has a flange in it to bottom out against.... and he has one of those adapters!! Its brass so will just have to get a steel 1/2 pipe collar or bushing or something and cut in half and weld to my pan for that adapter to thread into.

Yep, I see the piece you are talking about now. I think mine is the exact same setup. 5/8" UNF into a male pipe thread adapter.

Good you found the adapter. I can just imagine shopping for that, in the local hardware store.
