Autometers are EXPENSIVE!!

The cobalt are one of the more expensive autometer guage sets. Here are comparative prices for the same size speedo.

Cobalt - $249.95 (Electric sending unit)

Sport Comp - $176.88 (Electric) or $77.95 (Mechanical)

A few years back, i put a full complement of Autometer Sport Comp in my Camaro with the 5" speedo and tach, with fuel, oil press, volt and water temp in the 2 5/8" size for about $350 if I remember right. And that was with the electric speedo and sending unit.

Edit - Just looking at prices, you could get set up for under $500. Depending on your Speedo choice.

Same here this is the Tach I want to put in my truck.

The ilumination is just wicked. Eventually I want Speedo, Fuel, Volt, and Oil Pres Colbalt gauge but itll be awhile. Just the Monster tach to start with I wish they had a small RPM one though 10000 is plenty excessive for my 406 im sure

Cobalt series is fairly new isnt it, Id guess thats one reason their pricyer.

That tach is sweet..

At some point I plan to go with the green led lights for my Pro Comps... But at about $10 a bulb, kinda hard to cough up $90 for bulbs! :eek1: :doah: :haha:

Oh please... Those Cobalts look way tougher than any whitefaced gauge.. THATS way more ricer...

Kinda comical coming from someone who's gonna run beadlock hubcaps... :wink1:

Autometer gauges kick ass! They are worth the coin...

I have 4 Phantom (Whitefaced) in my truck. all mechanical 2 1/16: temp, oil pressure, volts, vacuum. I payed about $250 for them all...

I layed them into my dashboard.

I still plan on getting the 5" tach to match because sunpro tachs suck balls, I am on my 4th sunpro tach in 2 years...

I was lucky enough for them to fail under warrenty so I get a new one for no cost to me. And the one I have now has a wire loose in somewhere so sometimes the needle will jump and go crazy and I have to tug on the wires coming out the back and it goes back to normal.

Chevy305, tell me exactly what happens with your sunpro's. I have one now, and can't figure out exactly why it reads accurate one trip then ten minutes later it reads 3800 RPM no matter how hard I press on the skinny pedal. Not sure what is up. May just go ahead and get me a decent Autometer, but just wondering what you have seen. Mine is just like the one I saw one of the mods had.

Edit: Pauly383 has the same tach that I am currently running. Not sure what the issue is though.

VDO Tachometer Gauge, 7,000 rpm, Programmable, without Hourmeter, Mounting Hole: 3 1/8" (80 mm) diameter, Style: Vision

Vision: VDO Vision represents a true technological advancement in instrument illumination and installation. Using fiber-optic technology, Vision instruments feature VDO's TriopticTM through-dial lighting technology for superb nighttime illumination and pointer lighting. Illumination color can be changed from white to red or green with light diffusers (included).
The mounting system provides maximum flexibility and ease of installation. No metal brackets, nuts or washers are needed. The VDO Spin-Lok 3600 Mounting System uses a spin-on clamp, which holds the instrument with 3600 of force, preventing panel warping and gauge rotation. Mechanical pressure and temperature gauges have metal housings with u-clamp brackets.

This is an older picture, but the tach still looks the same is still mounted in the same place:

When my tach first went crazy I was doing donuts and the needle was at about 4500rpm then it started jumping around and pegged out to over 8K and stayed there no matter what.
The second, the needle just wouldn't read acurately after about a month.
The third, when the needle would stick at around 2K and then jump to 3K and work normally until you go back down to about 2K.
The fourth, there's a wire loose inside it that causes the needle to go erratic and jump around and try to settle at 0. I just tug on the wires a little bit and the needle returns to normal.

Some lasted longer than others but they all sucked.

Well that answers my question, I am just going to bite the bullet and buy an Autometer. The Sunpro is under warranty, but why deal with something that may not last, when I can just get a quality guage.

I've had my Autometers in since 2001 and have not had a single issue. I just have the Sport Comps.

All I can say is I've used VDO for 20+ years, never had a problem. :D
Yeah, they're simple, like for the "no tats, no rings" crowd.
