A customer had his '08 Titan towed into our dealership today and said his rear diff. blew up. This is what I found, the ring gear retaining bolts had all backed out and ate through the housing and the cover. I guess DANA built this one on a Monday or a Friday. :doah: The funny thing was he said he never heard any noise at all, I call BS on that!! The truck still drove, he found it by the smell of burnt gear oil.

happens to GM's too . The bolts backed out of the 3.73 10 bolt front I ran at BB06 . Went 4.56 with loctite on the bolts immediately after coming home :D

seen a jasper reman 10.5 ford axle reman from ford installed had abs codes and 1/2 inop speedo at times.

pulled cover and found 1 styrofome cup worth of metel and abs tone ring and ring gear and carrier and bolts snaped and chewed up and trashed beyond belife ........

its all b/s from cust side of the story and what we find is the truth no matter what thay say. we have seen it all. :doah:

At work we have put 2 of these axles into trucks. Both were from stupid owners, but I have heard that these are not very strong to begin with.

The '04 and '05 Titans had poor built axles, they would strip the teeth off of the side gears. The later model axles don't have this problem, this was just a fluke I hope. These are a version of the Dana 44 axle. This one has an e-locker in it, I wish I could salvage it for the front of my crew cab.

My brother had an 05 Titan, never abused it, never towed etc. pulled out from my shop one day, romped on it and BANG :doah:!!! It was covered under his extended powertrain warranty, they replaced the entire rear end with the newer (better) model. He also had a probem with one of the front shafts pulling out of the front diff, drivers side maybe, it was covered as well.

Does he have the lift kit on the front end? We've seen the front axles pop out only on the ones with lift. I've got two good front diffs, two good transfer cases and two good 2wd rear axles at home for Titans.

Heh, my dad works for Nissan/Infinity NA and he said for a few dollars more per axle, Dana would have run the axles in so there would be no break in. Apparently towing a load before it is, causes serious damage (its in the owners manual). To the point of blistering the paint on the housing due to the heat! :eek1: Eekk. Just like our BMW Motorsport cars. You beat the **** out of them during the break-in, they reward you with 1 liter in 400 mile oil consuption. Thats German mosquito fogging there.

Every '04 Titan I've ever seen had the paint blistered off of the rear diff. cover, whether they had hitches or not.

Didn't they switch to a 4 cross pinion(think open 14FF carrier) with the newer axle while the oldone had 2? I believe my Xterra has the 2 cross one. I do have the E locker though. WOrked great the one time we used it. 2 years ago.
