What axle is stronger -10 bolt gm or 12 bolt gm? Also will 3/4 ton axles bolt right onto a 1/2 ton truck or do you have to move the spring perches or anything else? Thanks!!
between the 10 and 12bolt i think its a toss up, the 3/4 ton stuff should bolt right in the 1 ton stuff is where u got to move perches and stuff
as far as which axle is better i would say the 10 bolt just because of aftermarket support. but then again id take a 14sf or 14ff anyday over the 10 and 12.
When you factor in everything, they are about equal. 12 has some advantages overs the 10, and vice versa.
The main problem you see with the 10 bolt are a result of the gov-lock exploding, any other 10 bolt failures that happen seem to occur with the 12 bolt as well.
The 12 bolt axle is marginally stronger than a 10 bolt.
Depending on the year of your rig will determine which axle will be a direct bolt in. The 69-72 will need a 1 ton rear axle and the 73-87 (91) will rquire a 3/4 ton rear axle. The front axles are all a direct swap including the u-joint if stock yoke is still on the axle. The rear axle will require a conversion u-joint though. I seen you have an 81 truck so you need the 3/4 ton rear axle.
