axle ratio

Stock ratio depended on a few things, you can look at the brochure page to figure it out, if that portion is legible for your '87. No direct link, sorry. Searching "brochure page dremu" works on yahoo for me. :)

nobody has mentioned the ghetto method, yet. just put the rear on jackstands, put the tranny in neutral, and turn the driveshaft until the tire makes one full revolution. count how many times the shaft went all the way around and that's your approximate ratio. it's not perfectly accurate, but 3.08 will be about 3 turns. 3.42 is about 3 and a half turns, etc. do it a few times and sort of average it out.

That's not ghetto... That's the easiest way. No gear oil to drain and refill, no gaskets, no bolts. If its off the truck, pull the cover.

Ive owned a 78, 84, and an 83 half ton, and drove an 86 and 87 and all of them had 3.08s. the 85 I have now is the first one Ive ever seen with factory 3.73s. most likely its got 3.08s but you may get lucky.

repaired a friends Burb that had 3.73's in it,,,so obviously you are going to have to do some digging, or even better yet, just pull the cover,,,,always a good idea anyways, check your gearing numbers, inspect the internals and replace the oil with fresh stuff

btw, you don't NEED to "count the teeth" the numbers are stamped right on the ring gear.

just a tip if its not a posi u can only jack one wheel up and turn it two full turns to get the correct ratio.

My 87 come with 3.42, just take the cover off and find the stamping to be sure, probably needs some new fluid anyway, its probably the origanal fluid with how many miles on it?
