Axle U-joint replacement. How to??

Remove:
tire
caliper
locking hubs
axle nuts and spacers
rotor/hub
spindle
backing plate

Pull axle shaft out
Remove ujoint clips (inside)
press old ujoint out

Install in reverse order:wink1:

its the most amount of work you can possibly do to replace one of the simplest parts.:doah:

clark has it right.

i use a balljoint press for u-joints. i used one on the trail last saturday for both of my rear driveshaft u-joints. will be a little harder to fit in your case, but i bet it would work.

I just did mine and at least one was probably the original. I had to beat the snot out of them, I used penetrant, and heat. Finally won though.

Becareful of hitting the yoke ears.

I'm sure you know the big socket, little socket deal?

When reinstalling them be careful to hold the cap against the cross as you knock the second cap in.

Make sure your working surface is clean as (with the D44) you have to remove both caps to fit the cross into the yoke and if anything touches, the grease won't be contaminated.

Oh yeah I found you had to pay pretty close attention to the C clips to make sure they didn't rotate while pounding the second cap in, and I found once that a little tap towards the shaft actually helped seat it. Kinda scary, I wonder if that could've caused a cap to spit?

on the trail or in the garage, brake parts cleaner is a life-saver for this. as long as you clean he ears off nicely, especially the groove in there, life is good and there's nothing to worry about.

ball joint press for 4x4 axles are too small for 1480 axle shaft u-joints for a dana 60 front. I used a hammer and socket and it took me 5 minutes each side after i broke my vice.

1480? Thats huge...never heard of something that big... Do some guys run 1480's on their d-shafts or is the point to make sure if you break a u-joint that it'll be the one in the d-shaft thats easier to swap out?
