Hey guys I am am looking for some axles for my truck and I came across a 79 ford 1 ton. What are the axles underneath it. The only reason that I am asking is because I think I can get the truck real cheap. Like close to nothin'. My brother owns the truck and the body is shot completely. The thing has a 460 in it with a manual tranny. How close are these axles to being able to bolt in.

You would need major fabrication, and new transfer case (FORD), and modifications to the underside of the front end to accomodate the drive shaft on the driver's side.

Thanx seafarer, well that is alittle more work than I want to do. By the way I have gotten prices on chevy 3/4 ton 14bff for 400 and dana 60 for 600. how are these prices. I am pretty sure that I will be regearing them anyway so the gearing doesn't matter.

Thats a little high for the 14bff, but a rea good price on the dana 60. If the axles are in good shape and for sale from the same person, I ouwl pobably get the pair of axles for $1000, not too bad for the pair. If they are for sale seperate, I would say get the 60, and shop around for the 14. Are they both off of a 3/4 ton? I was under the impression that the 3/4 ton had a Dana 44 rather than the dana 60. Double check its a D60 before you lay out the cash.

I don't know if you have the space to have an extra truck lying around but you might look into buying a whole 1 ton because those prices don't sound terrible but when I was still up in Washington state I bought 3 full 1 tons for less than $1000 bucks apiece and I still have the full drivetrains and bodies to play around with after I use the axles. Just a thought.

I agree with 79shortbox. alot of time you can find a whole parts truck for $300-1000. the last one i got was a halfton but it was a full running truck that the guy lost the title for and i got it for $300.00

I used to run a dana 24 TC out of a 72 furd highboy, thing is all gear driven, and all real american iron.
Yeah I had to fab a cross member and make the ujoints mate from trans to TC but not really an issue compared to finding a steel bell housing that would fit my 521 caddy to the snout of a sm465... what fun that was!

If you can get it for nothing, do it, and part it out. There's a lot of folks that think the '79 Ford Dana 60 front is the holy grail. It's a high-pinion design. You could probably eBay that part alone for enough to get a good set of used Chevy-ready axles.
