Did a search and didn't find an answer. I broke my 10 bolt gov loc ( finally!! ). Found a 1973 1/2 ton p/u in yard and yanked 12 bolt. Tried some 10 bolt 30 spline shafts (free), were too short by cross shaft in diff. Bought some 12 bolt shafts (told they were) they are too short also. Ended up putting some weld on the end of the axle. My question is will the weld break and axles let c-clips come out? Looks like they might not. I do have another set of supposed 12 bolt shafts coming, just wish I was there to measure them beforehand.

12 bolts are wider than 10 bolts.. the shafts anyways.. i have a set of 5 lug 12 bolt shafts you can have cheap if they'll help to get you on the road..

I wouldn't use an axle modified like that....

Why didn't you just grab the whole 12 bolt? It is a little bit stronger. I think there is a length difference between 12b car and truck axles, someone on here will chime in on this. Specify truck axles.

I did grab the whole 12 bolt, it is 5 lug though. Axles are harder to come by than they used to be. I have been driving with the weld on the axle tip for 3 days and every noise I hear whether it is axle or not just scares me to death.

I have a complete 3.73 12b also....6 lug even....

To bad you live so far away /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If my next set of axles ( free exchange ) does not fit. I will probably get with ya on that. But it wouldn't be soon so don't hold it for me.

12bolts from 72 down are not as wide. Get a 12bolt axles from late 70's and you should be fine.

70-82 12 bolt shafts are sall same length, 70 went wider and stayed til end of 12 bolt era
six and five lug all same length and splines

even 10 bolt shafts are supposed to be same length as 70-82 12 bolt shafts, but in 88 all axle models got increased number of shaft and side gear splines

measure me your 10 bolt shaft from wheel flange to end of splined end of shaft, i want ot know what it is.

12 bolt are right about 31 3/16" give or take a 1/16" i still have a 12 bolt shaft 70-up in shed,

64-69 12 bolt were narrower, just a little about .76"

good luck

I am reading this late on x-mas eve. I will measure it on x-mas while I'm in my garage hiding from my In-laws. I have the ones in garage and they match the ones I added 1/8 inch of weld on c-clip button. I also have the 5 lug axles which will be going for a ride when my 12 bolt shafts show up, I'll measure em all.

[/ QUOTE ] Ok , all measured to the best of my eye with a tape, measured from the flange back where the wheelstuds go. 5 lug 12 bolt circa 1973 31 and a sixteenth. 10 bolt shafts circa 1989 suburban 31 even. I am not sure of my measurements as I have nothing but measuring tape. One thing I am sure of when the 5 lug 2wd shafts are in I have very little play in axle, almost snug up to crosshaft. When using the 10 bolt shafts ( both the 1989 burban or the unknown shafts sent to me) the axles does not make it close enough to crosshaft.

well that all sounds right, they are real close to same, extremely, but the end of the shaft for groove for the C clip; are not same distance from end of shaft from 12 bolt to 10 bolt

good luck

Thanks, hopefully my shafts make it to me soon. The ones I have a little weld on seem to be holding up. When we did it, we welded, hammered it to check it , ground it down, welded again. Think all the hardened crosshaft would do is polish the weld.

I had a 12 that came out of a 72 2wd and it was not as wide as my 75 4x4. It was 1/5 inches narrow. I wanted the cshafts as spares. The axle came out of my buddies old 72 that he blew the rear end out of. Now I do know that axle was not origianl to the truck so maybe it was 70 or older.
I know the 70-72 Burbs ran a wider axle. That has been discussed a few times over at 67-72. My 70 appeard to track the same width front and rear.
