I have an odd, intermittent grinding noise coming from the front of my Sub. It sometimes can be heard in 2WD, but when in 4WD with the hubs locked it is very loud. Some of the members here have said it's probably a hub issue, but I talked with the PO yesterday and he is pretty confident it is axlewrap. I've never really heard of axlewrap in the front axle before.

Would it make a noise? And what parts in particular would be making the noise?

Axle wrap should only be a concern on the trail, when you're applying throttle, but the tires aren't moving. In any event it doesn't grind. Grinding is bad. Sounds like a hub issue though.

the po is saying that axle wrap is occuring when the front drivetrain is disengaged? that doesn't make sense.

is the sound coming from one side or both? does it ever do it at a stop? my friend's truck was grinding when he stopped and when i dug in there, i found that his bellhousing was splitting and his flywheel was grinding against it.

No, but he did say he was pretty condident the noise was axlewrap, and only when in 4WD.

And I have heard the noise when the engine is cold and idling high(>1,000 RPMs) and stopped while in gear with my foot on the brake. This is a rare occurrence. 95% of the time I hear it is when in 4WD going over bumps or accelerating from a dead stop. It is noticably louder in 4WD.

The noise is definitely from the front, and it seems to be more to the driver's side.

I really hope it's not the bellhousing issue you mentioned. That sounds $$$$:eek1:

sounds like the drive shaft is hitting the stops and binding. but since it happenes in 2wd , check the rear one.
