Has anyone succeeded in welding these shut and not having cracks appear? My truck will be getting a color change and I was thinking about welding these shut.

I've seen these welded on SEMA show vehicles in past and a few others at truck shows, none were cracked that I noticed. Know knowledge though on if the welds crack though. If done properly I don't see why the welds would fail.

In the old days the used to fill them with lead.
It doesn't shrink or crack
