Is there any adjustment in the switch in which makes the back up lights come on? When I put the truck in reverse I have to move the gear selector around until the ligts come on in reverse...

thanks

Assuming it's an auto, yep, it's at the base of the steering column. Older trucks have two little sheetmetal screws with maybe 1/4" hex heads to hold 'em down. I seem to recall newer trucks have plastic snaps or something weird, but once you wrestle yourself down there with a flashlight it should be kinda obvious. The neutral safety switch is also there, might be all one adjustment, I forget.

I donno about manuals, haven't owned one.

The switch should be towards the bottom of the steering column and can be adjusted some. Typically what happens is the shifter gets wear and slop in it and causes the issue you have. My K5 has been like this for years as you can hit reverse in the trans but have to move the shifter slightly to get the lights to kick on.

Yes this is exactly what I am trying to solve....

Bringing this thread back up,.... how do you make this adjustment on the back-up light switch?

thanks

Loosen it, either unscrew or unsnap depending on your fastener type, then rotate the switch around the steering column until the lights come on reliably.

Mine did the same thing. I was unable to see the switch, but I could feel it on the top of my 91's column way at the base near the firewall.

I used a little wrench to loose the bolts, and with the parking brake on I put it in reverse, and then slid it to the side with a friend watching. When it came on, I then went left & right a little to get "centered" and then tightened it snug. Then I tested the column lever a few times to be sure it worked as expected.

I messed with mine last night. It appeared to be a little white plastic type device at the bottom of the column. I was able to rotate the switch, like it had a bunch of little knotches for adjustment either way....Seems that they are working well now in the entire slop motion of reverse after making some adjustments...
