this thing is annoying me. I have an edelbrock 600cfm part# 1406 carb on top of a performer intake running into a stock 454, stock except for the comp 4x4 cam inside it anyway. So when ever I try to drive this thing with the motor cold I get multiple backfires through the carb. It clears up when the engine is about 200 degrees. Anyone else had these problems? Is maybe the choke causing this to happen? I know I know, get fuel injection!

It might be an exhaust leak close to the exhaust manifold, and when it warms up the leak seals itself. Make sure the EGR valve is not stuck open, if you have one.

It sounds like you are running lean. Might just need to adjust the choke
OR
Is the carb set up for a big block? Most 600CFM carbs are jetted for small blocks.
You may need to get smaller meetering rods or diferent jets,to meet the fuel needs of a BBC. Espically one with a cam.

ignition related
a carb will rarely cause a spark in the intake
