So got the backhoe running today. Fittings on the fuel lines are pretty old and shot so I am pretty sure it is super hard to start because of that.

Pump is still screaming at us. Fluid is aerated and foaming pretty bad. Makes it really hard to check the level.

How do you go about bleeding the hydraulics on a backhoe?

We extended and retracted all the rams several times and it got better. Drove it around and it got better. We have a couple leaks to chase.

This hoe hasn't run in several years.

Never worked on a backhoe, but on the wreckers at work we (slowly) retract all of the rams and let it set a while. (to get the foam to settle) Then we (slowly) extend all the rams and let it set a while. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Usually only takes 2-3 cycles to get the air out. I don't know if you can control the RPM on the pto, but slower works better for bleeding as it introduces less air into the fluid.

Oh and fix the leaks, cause you know they let air back into the system.
