I'm installing a used carrier and pinion support (with detroit in it), So I'm following the procedure over on Pirate to set the backlash. I get the backlash to about .008 then I torque down the carrier bolts and the backlash then seems to jump to around 0.020. Once the carrier bolts are torque, it seems a little more difficult to move the ring gear by hand.

Am I doing something wrong? Why is the backlash increasing when I torque the carrier bolts. That doesn't make sense to me.

i did a full reman on a 14ff. that was the hardest part. took a few attempts to ge it.

and dont forget the backlash check needs to be done on a few spots then get the average. if you spin the gear/carrier you will fine some diffrence . like .008 in 1 spot and .006 in another. that would mean its actualy .007 backlash.

make sure you have the caps torqued down a lil to where the adjusters still move freely and make sure you set and lock down the adjusters to where they are tight against the bearing on both sides, then fully tighten down the caps.it takes a few times to get it right sometimes.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still trying to understand how backlash is affected by the torque on the bearing caps. I would think only pinion depth would be affected. I'm noticing that once the bearing caps are torqued it makes it harder to check backlash since the effort to jiggle the ring gear (while holding the pinion) seems to increase. I tend to make the simplest of jobs harder, this one is no different.
