when i come to a stop, if i'm very gentle on the 'woah' pedal, it will sink to the floor before grabbing really quickly and locking the front brakes. however, if i jam on the pedal with any force, it stops fine and will stay all the way up if i keep that same amount of pressure on it. does that sound like the booster is going bad?

Unfortunately, no... I'm thinking the master has scoring or something.

A bad booster, vacuum anyway, should just require an insane amount of force to stop ... much like when the motor is off.

You can test the booster; turn off the engine with your foot OFF the brake. Wait ten minutes or so, and then come back and push the brake pedal... you should get two or three pumps before the effort gets REALLY hard. If it's really hard from the getgo, you either have a vacuum leak at the booster or the booster is bad.

If it's still soft, Karnak The Invincible sees a new master cylinder and a brake bleed in your future.

Now, if you have hydroboost (diesel or some 1-tons) which assist the braking using hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump, all bets are off... but neither of mine have gone bad yet, so I donno ;)

I once had the same problem and knew nothing about my brakes so I called my dad and asked if it could be the brake booster. he replied by telling me that if the brake booster were bad then stepping on the brakes would be like trying to stomp a rock.

x2 on the master cylinder
