Chevy hood special...

I'm on hood #2. Ex wife helped that...

not my truck in the pic... but before I knew better I bent the hood on the K5. nothing like this however.

Need a factory 73-74 hood, they don’t have the crease built in to collapse in a wreck.

The biggest thing I worry about doing on the 73 is bending the hood. Someone told me you're supposed to push on front of the hood to close it.

Correct. Push forward and down at the same time. Make sure your hinges are lubed up well.
Also the 73-74 hood were much better as they were designed correctly, in 75 they took out some bracing to make it bend up in a crash. So 75-80 hoods are much more prone to bending.

Or get a cowl induction hood like the cool kids.

Didn't the aftermarket make a hood stiffening plates that went between hood and hinge?

Found it
Not quite the same as I remember.

On my 76 my buddy had welded in some like 1” or 1.5” tube to the hood that ran pretty much the length of it. It was pretty stiff after that.
Also, live the **** out of them constantly.

I been spraying my hinges every couple months. We had a 75 K5 that came with hood already bent, it was a pain.

Good to know the older hoods are better. I probably would do a cowl hood if mine bent.

Mine folded up just like that.

Wow, could it have been a replacement? I have a friend that bought a '74 Sub for parts (years ago) and the hood on it didn't have the preformed "crease" across the underside.

Could be. I felt the hood was original, but the fenders were not.

Are you sure? I never knew this. Next time I see a 73-74 at the junk yard I'll take a look. Interesting that they would redesign the hood only after two years.

Years ago @spicer bought a 74 2wd Sub that did not have that crumple zone indents on the underside. As for the change after only 2 years, that's likely attributed to updated gov't crash / crumple requirements. I could be wrong but I don't an aftermarket company would take on the liability of eliminating the indents.

Surely someone here has one of these original hoods?
