HHe walked away from this. There stock cab provides little protection.

Looked like a fairly clean truck, glad to see he was alright.

that really sucks man. glad he's alright.

makes me think about puttin a cage into my k5, especially while runnin a soft top.

The gov loc in the 10b grenaded. Then he lost control. Seen it a hundred times.....
Explain this please? I have an all stock 91 K5 with a limited slip in the back, and I take my son around in it ... tell me I am safe or not?

When I broke mine, driveshaft twisted in half, no way I would have lost control unless the axleshaft had come out at the same time.

In that truck, driveshaft appears to be intact. No idea if the driveshaft failure is required when the gov-lock lets go, but I would imagine it to be common.

You say all stock with limited slip, GM calls it a locker, did you add a limited slip diff or is it the the gov-lock, RPO G80?

It's the RPO G80.

The way the guts of mine were shredded, again, unless the axleshaft snapped at the wheel bearing and the wheel came off near-instantly, the destruction of the gov-lock shouldn't cause a problem with control. The internals of the gov-lock aren't strong enough to stop the wheels from turning, nor is the ring/pinion.

They don't work over 25MPH anyway, if failed they can stay locked up, but unless turning, that doesn't stress the unit.

K5 FTW....

First, i am glad they walked away and sorry this has happened..

Luckily, my son wasnt with me.. Was driving my 2005 silverado, that had the newer style 10 bolt rear with gov-lock.

Driving down a 4 lane 1 way road and hit a bump.. The rear axle shock loaded and the rear axle literally exploded. ruining the the housing, blowing the cover to bits and scattering all over the road (see pics in my sort build page --SS-Crap)
I nearly flipped it because the tires separated from the truck and nearly killed people swerving around me (all 4 lanes scattered and slammed there brakes and dodged me) luckily no one was hurt, but it was a big scene...Why i refuse to another 10 bolt back in my truck.... I called GM about the issue and they didnt seem to care

to anyone whos been in that situation, i feel for you, and hope no one was injured
