I'm not sure if it was rolled over or hit in the front. A few things I notice.

1) The hood did not bend
2) The integrated rollover bar looks sound
3) The front end does not have much of a crush zone

I'm not sure what happened.

One thing that concerns me is that these old K5s don't have front air bags. Anyone thought about adding front air bags to the K5?

Updated w/ mew pic - looks like a rollover from a hit on the passenger side

Not sure what your callin a rollover bar but mine didnt have anything in it and I personally would'nt want an air bag on anything that was gonna see offrodad use.

"rollover bar" "roll-bar"
the B-pillar is actually a reinforced multi layer structured setup, not a tube bar but multiple layers of steel to act like an integrated rollbar. Suburbans have them out to the far rear too, found this out when I was cutting one up once.. :doah:

There was a thread a while back ago when someone had cut up his k5 and sliced into the integrated roll-bar. It is just some thicker metal that has been channeled. It looks like it may be good for only one roll over. A cage would still be needed.

The drivers air bag would need to be turned off when 4x4ing. It is just the frontal impacts that I would be concerned about if I made the K5 a daily driver. After being in a wreck I'm cautious now about safety.

Just make ya a suit outta bubble wrap and wear your seat belt.

If you could safely ad an airbag to an older vehicle the aftermarket would be all over it. It takes allot of engineering to make a airbag system work. If you simply bolted one to your steering wheel or dash it would kill the person in front of it when it deployed.

that's a bad wreck...

think they were overdoing it a bit?

About the air bags. im sure it would be possible but you would need a VSS that wouldent allow it to deploy under 15mph the only thing i could think of that might be intergrated into older vehichles would be a shock or g force meter set to the fore/aft motion of the vehicle or else it would go off over a rough bump. The reason there is no aftermarket for airbags is mostly liability. its not that they cant do it but that they would be much much more liable for a non certified crash test standard on every possible vehicle all the way back to 1900s.

I did a quick search and found this clicky

Some lady drifted into the center barricade, over corrected her steering and slammed into me. Which pushed me into that barricade on the right, launching me into the air and flew 20-30 feet landing on the roof and sliding a few feet to a stop. Lucky to be alive right now.
His name is Nick Anderson says it was on his way back from Moab

Thats a bit more than a rollover. If he was launched into the air and came down on his lid from being airborn that is a tremendous amount of force on that structure

The amount of engineering necessary would be immense. You'd have to change just about every part of the vehicle in order to make it function properly and you'd basically end up reengineering the truck completely.

That's just the frame, suspension, and body structure.

Then start on sensors and wiring and computers.

Go buy a truck with an airbag if you're that worried about it.

Looks like it did a front roll and sorta rolled onto the top. It is metal reinforced. Why they're so heavy and hard to cut up.

If the description of the wreck is accurate, I think it held up great. However, looking at these photos and chalet's wreck made me realize its time to look into a family cage and seatbelt upgrade since I put the soft top on mine...

After seeing this vid it makes me want to get a full cage. The integrated "roll bar" help but the windsheld caved in.

There is little to nothing in Azusa that could cause this. Just stupidity. I have seen first hand children driving trucks down there. I WILL NOT ever ride my quad at that place again, it's too dangerous. Between the idiots that stand near yanking trucks, to the booze they have to sneak in, or the shear ignorance and lack of others safety....that place has become a gathering of POS offroaders.

My avatar was taking there btw.
