What are the symptoms of bad gas?

I have been driving my 87 350 tbi for about three months now with no problems at all. About 500 miles ago, I put on new plugs, wires, cap, fuel and air filters, etc...and everything has been fine. Today though, about three blocks from home, she started sputtering, the check engine light was going on at the low rpms, and ran like crap. Revved her to the moon, ran great for most of the rest of the day. Thought it was a minor hiccup, and then she did it again. This time I had to pull into a parking lot cause I thought I wasn't going to make it home. Decided to try and limp back, couple of blocks later, she cleared completely and ran great. What is going on???

Thanks for any input!

could be the o2 sensor, egr? check the codes on the check engine light and see what it says. send them back to me and i will tell you what they are.

if you dont know how to check the codes heres how. under the dash buy the e-brake is a connector take a wire and conect the top right 2 , then turn the key so the power comes on ,the check engin light will begin to flash count them. the first is 12 like this flsh.......flashflash it will do each # 3 times and when it gets back to 12 its done.

It should repeat the codes that are in the computer starting with 12, then any trouble codes. When it is done it will repeat all of the codes starting with 12 until you turn the key to off. Did you only put the key in run and not try to start the vehicle? It really takes no time at all.

ok
it's not giving me any codes
the light is just going out and a bunch of wierd noises from the engine bay

Then technically there are no codes stored. When mine came on and went off the first one was O2 getting rich signal which was a bad injector. And the second one was an intermitent low TPS voltage not sure what caused that one but it has not returned:dunno:.

I would drive it until it happens again and then check for codes again.

so the only code it gave was 12, no other trouble codes? next time the light comes on when you get home check the codes and if you dont know them post them up someone will tell you what they are.

allright, happened again...and no codes again....

Would a fuel pump issue give me codes? Could this be the first sign of a bad pump?

no ,well with no codes i would have to say thats all i can think of , because you;ve allready changed the fuel filter right , if it were egr o2 or any other stuff on the engin it shoul tell you. i recken fuel pump :dunno:

here's a quick question. When I was trying to get the codes to work, I had the fuel filter out. When I turned the key on, it would put some fuel out of the line. Does that mean that the pump is working ok? And what are the first signs of a fuel pump going south?

btw, I appreciate everyone's help. I have had this truck for four worry free months, and just sold my other car with confidence YESTERDAY :)

So, it figures that my only ride to work will give me problems now

You should never turn the key on while the batt is connected with the fuel system other than 100%. If the filter was not there it should have shot fuel everywhere at a pretty good rate of flow. I think you may have inadvertantly found your problem.
