Hello,

I have problems with the idle in my 1979 Blazer.

The engine is a rebuild (1000 miles since) 350cui 030" over engine. Equipped with a Edelbrock performer cam, Headers with dual exhaust, ported heads, stock gm aluminum 4brl. intake manifold and an edelbrock 1405 performer carb with manual choke.

The engine runs strong and healthy till yesterday afternoon. There was no problem when i used the truck in the morning. At afternoon i needed it again. The engine starts easy but the idle is bad now. It will almost die at idle and sometimes the engine speed rises a bit without touching the throttle.
If I press the throttle sligtly to rise the rpm (for example) to 1200rpm´s the engine takes one or two seconds before responding. The same while driving near idlespeed.
Hitting the throttle to wide open, the engine responses imediately without any recognizable problems and pulls fine.
But if it goes back to idle, same problem.

For a few month i replaced my leaking too small 5/16" fuelfilter with a new one. On the package stands made in china. I couldn´t get anything other than that around town with a 3/8" inlet and outlet. Mayby this little thing of crap is causing dirt in my crburetor?
Or do you have any other suggestions for my problem?

While idleing, insure the choke butterfly is open and not blocking the airway. If that is good, look into the carb while running and see if fuel is dumping from the float bowl. If it is, then the needle and seat are stuck, or the float sunk. Anyway, check that and let us know what you find and we will be able to go from there.

Yesterday i checked the carb, the choke butterfly is open and there is no fuel droping from the fuel bowl. I know this problem from my 258cui Carter BBD Jeep carb.
The only thing i have done is to rise the idle speed setting a bit from 500 rpm to about 750 rpm .
It´s a bit confusing for me, because the engine idles good again without really fixing something:confused:. Today i checked it also. Everything is fine now.
I am not sure now, i hope the problem will not come again while i am on the road away from home. I need a reliable truck.

Greetings from Germany

You may have had trash or water in the carb. Sometimes, if this was the case, it will clear itself and run fine. If not, it may return. Keep us posted.

Vacuum leak maybe, at the carb gasket? The test here is to spray WD40 (I donno what the local equivalent would be -- maybe soapy water would do?) around the base of the carb, and listen to see if the idle changes when the leak is temporarily plugged.

WD40 is ... oh, heck:

http://www.wd40.com/

It's not reactive the way say, carb cleaner would be, but the carb gasket would expand a bit as it picked up the fluid... :dunno:
