Bad luck or I screwed up?

First transmission lost reverse, as in burned it up, pan full of black crap. Swapped in this junkyard trans and I have not had reverse at all. The reason I don't think it is the converter is that the truck acts like its trying to grab at idle once in a while.
On the van you couldn't reverse no matter how high it revved or it just had to rev really high?

On the Van, if there was a rearward incline... .just the slightest slope behind the van.... you could rev the Van to redline and it would not move. I am talking SLIGHT incline. I could have probably pushed the Van backwards. On level ground it would slowly start to move but the engine would have to be revved up.... by the sound of the engine I would guess it was at least over 2500rpms. Once the van was moving in reverse it would pick up speed. Think of it as a truck at a stop and then starts to roll downhill. It would start out that slow.

Another thing was that he "thought" that his rpms were too high on the highway. He would be at 2400 rpms at around 65-70 mph. He could still accelerate (froma stand still or moving) at what seemed a normal rate for the weight of the van. It was just his gut feeling that the converter was slipping and that what caused him to replace it. And now his rpms are lower on the highway. Can't remember what he said they were now.... not that it really applies here.

Not saying that this is your problem, but then again my Brother and I would have never guessed it was the torque converter on the Van.... and he is a Chief Engineer on a large container ship.

I've been working on tuning the carb, so every once in a while, I'll try the reverse again. It seens to be getting better every time. The last time it actually moved a few inches. At this point, I'm guessing something was wrong with the governor and when I removed it and put it back in I somehow fixed it? Maybe if I try enough times, it will actually work the way its supposed to.

Well it seems I got it fixed. Pullecd the governor back out and made sure it was fully in and the truck reverses now. Still seems like its slipping a little, but it moves now, so I'm happy.
