1 1/4. It fits good but wont sit on there quite square. Its not rounding the nut or anything. It just moves a little before I can get a little pressure on it to keep it there. 1 1/8 is to small. Is it metric?

Use a short extension and a jack stand. Place the extension in the socket and place the jack stand right in front of and just below the extension to support it. You want the socket/extension to point straight out, use shims under the jack stand to get it as perfect as possible.
This will support the socket and keep it in line. Now you can put on your breaker bar and cheater bar and when you apply down force the stand will keep the socket from getting on an angle and slipping off.

Yes, this is how to do it. Although it sounds tempting when you have 100's of ft-lbs to deliver, you should not use the impact wrench unless you really know what you're doing. To keep the pinion from turning, I find that a large pipe wrench on the yoke works well. Let the handle rest on the floor or the frame of the truck.
