Balancing drivelines

If it's sealed up good, you could use ATF. Had to do that to my regular DS after it got shortened up. I've been told that if it's close you can use hose clamps, but I think the ATF works better. Just make a hole big enough to funnel the ATF in, when you get about a quart or so, just weld the hole shut. Works in the same fashion as airsoft bb's in a tire.

i dont know about ATF since it slips in and out constantly, it would be easy to fill, it just might leak when it moves. can i use airsoft bbs in my driveline?

the truck is green stickered so i wont be running it on the road. im running a square tube shaft in front and rear

Well, you've got U-Joints on each end, so it should chuck up in a standard driveshaft balance machine.
You just need to find a driveshaft shop with one.
The main problem I see will be spinning it.
The machine I am familiar with uses a belt that you lower down on the normal round shaft to spin it .
It should spin a square one though.

Is the smaller diameter side made with solid square tube? If not, just cap it. One side is capped with the u-joint, just cap the other side. Hell, you could just fill up the shaft then weld your cap on. Wouldnt ever have to worry 'bout leaks unless the driveshaft gets damaged, and then you probably arent worried about balance at that point.

But if you are driving off road only, does it really matter if the DS is balanced? Or are you running in the desert/dunes?

Is running a square drive shaft a comon thing with you guys?I would use vegtable oil rather than atf to fill it so if it breaks. They must sell square ends for that sort of thing I would think?I think I would drive it before filling it with fluid.I shortened mine to fit from a long bed and it doesnt vibrate at all even at 85mph and never balanced it.

It'd be interesting to see what a driveline shop would say if you asked them to balance a square shaft.

i want to be able to run it in the dunes if i want to. caping one end is a good idea. the bottom end is sealed realy well so i think i will fill it and cap it. thanks guys

If you do cap the smaller piece I would recommend drilling a hole at the end of the big piece to let air out as it compresses, don't want to break a t-case or adapter because the air had nowhere to go.

I put ATF in my rear shaft but didn't bother with the front one, never felt vibes from either up to 60 mph.

thats a great idea "hole in the top"!
hey CYBRFIRE do you know why the DIY4X website says service unavailable??

No, unfortunately I don't know what's wrong with it but hope to have it sorted out tomorrow morning.

Alot of folks are replacing front driveshafts with square tube for the simplicity and durability. Easy to make, hard to break. The few I've seen in operation have blown u-joints long before the shaft will bend or break. Pretty stout stuff. I have heard of some poeple using square tube for rear shafts, but usually just rock crawlers who want something that doubles as a skid plate on a very light buggy.

As for using ATF as the balancer, it works best since it stays fluid through a wide range of temps. Engine oil can goop up at lower temps which would actually be worse for balancing. And ATF wont break down over time like organic stuff would, such as veggie oil and such.
