Balancing plate

$24 for balancing plate and use lighter weight flywheel that I have laying around or $150-300 for a correct flywheel.

So it's a money issue then. Keep this in mind, the balance plate goes between the crank and flywheel which pushes the flywheel ring gear away from the starter bendix gear which leaves less engagement for the starter bendix and will eventually wear out both the starter bendix and the flwheel ring gear.
 
They now sell "universal" chevy V8 flex plates that come with a few balance weights,so you just bolt on whatever weights your engine requires ,so it can be used on externally balanced engines (400 SB & 454's) as well as internally balanced ones..

If you are talking manual tranny flywheels,thats another thing altogether..I'd opt for the right one in that case..
 
Never dealt with a balancing plate, but it doesn't sound like a great idea. Starter engagement may be an issue. If money is tight, I'm sure a used flywheel would do the trick, and even if it needs resurfacing, you should come out ahead over a new one.
 
Thanks for the insight, there were no reviews on the web sights so I turned to you guys (didn't think about the plate messing up the starter) I have 3 350 flywheels setting on a shelf but haven't located one for the 454.
 
I think I have the flywheel from the 7.4l vortec that was in my dually. I'm not sure if it will cross over. For a stick right?
 
Lots of reviews on Google, only a couple issues noted

Check your engagement on the flywheel with the starter bolted up. Main issue will be the nose housing clearance. These plates are only 1/8 thick so that is the spacing you are working with. You can also look at the wear pattern on your existing flywheel teeth to verify the starter gear is traveling fully.
Check your throwout bearing travel to make sure that extra 1/8 inch will still allow you to release the clutch
Cheap fix that has been used hundreds of times...
