Ball joint life span?

Whats wrong with that one? I have one just like it. Just used it on my junk last week,

No, No, not on your junk, its for the ball joints, repeat, joints.......

What axle do you have in your ford? Is it that D50 TTB one?

I think so. Its independent, and fairly beefy. Don't they make a 44 with a hinge also?

To be honest, other than a input shaft seal, and, I think a set of axle joints, it has been pretty much trouble free.

I'm blessed with a great mechanic friend, and since I maintain all his computerized equipment no charge, plus help him out on weird electrical problems, about all I ever pay for is parts.
And he gets a discount on them.
So, standard maintenance items and wear repairs, I don't do much of anymore.

What is really sad, is that my truck has been down for about 3 months now, and neither one of us knows for sure what the problem is.

When I finally find out what is what, I'll post a story here.
I would normally post for help here even if it is a Ford, but its so weird, I don't know where to start.
Plus I have not had a chance to get hands on with it. But, that is going to change real soon.

For the record you can get a similar balljoint tool from NAPA. Have to dig through their tool catalog to find it though.

Heard rumblings on the local Jeep forum that Moog's stuff has been problematic. I have NAPA parts in mine just because I bought them before I knew of the side zerk thing. Mine just have a zerk plug in them and hope they don't wear out too soon.

Also heard there's some aftermarket D44 sized ball joints that are supposed to be VERY beefy. Prices are high but last you should ever need unless you're truly beating on it. Anybody running those?

Fordum, F150 or F250?
F150 got the TTB coil sprung high pinion reverse cut D44.
F250 got the TTB leaf sprung high pinion reverse cut D50.

Just installed ball joints so I went to see about that.
They are made by DYNATRAC and they are for the JK 44's only [for now]
And, they are about $600 a set :eek1:... no lie.

That sounds like an all you can eat buffet I went to one time.
I like to eat, and they were serving some of my favorite stuff. Figured I would make out well.

Loaded my plate up, took about two bites, and that was about all I could eat.
It was Awful!!

Realized that it was not an all you can hold buffet, it really was all you can eat, or stand to eat.

You buy a $600 set of ball joints, they will last you a lifetime. You won't be able to afford to replace them..........

mine lasted at least 20000 from the time i got it til i replaced them a couple years ago.the ones that came off i dont know how they were holding the knuckle on.they pretty much fell apart when i pressed them in.i run 35s and still had mine on for probly 20,000 miles and grease them once a year.they are still nice and tight.whats wrong with them that tyouy think they need replaced again?if you cant wiggle them up and down with the wheel off the ground, they are still good.if there is any movement in the knuckle when you lift them up at the wheel they are bad.12,000 and they should still be nice and tight.either they are crap joints to begin with or something went wrong with them internally.i use moog on all my ball joints if possible.

dunno if it was said, maybe NAPA, but I've never been able to find one of those ball joint sockets anywhere other than on a Snap-on truck. It was 25 bucks, dunno what the actual cost is, it's just what I happened to have in my wallet at the time and the guy knows me. :) So I either got ripped off or saved some cash. haha

Well I pulled the old axle out of the blazer today. Only 1 upper ball joint is tight, the rest have play. I think on the axle going in it, I will try some MOOG joints.

If I remember, there was a standard and a heavy duty and thats what I got.not sure on part number.you sure the knuckle where it is pressed in is tight and not worn out also?did u replace the castle nut lookin taper insert on the upper ball joints?just checkin all possible problematic areas.

taper insert was changes. Everything else looked fine. not sure if i mentioned it, but the roads around here are junk, frost heaves, pot holes. So im sure chinese built joints, crappy roads, heavy mud tires have contributed to the accelerated wear.
