My lower drivers side ball joint is going on me. Can that be replaced without taking apart the wheel and pulling out the axle?

I just changed the driver's side ball joints. The upper driver's side was completely shot (I had to grind the nut off because it was spinning freely in the socket.) When I took it into the shop to press it out, the guy said that the lower was going out too so I made a quick run to NAPA to pick up the lower. The shop charged me $19 to press them out and in.
