Is there a special procedure to remove ball joints on a flat top knuckle. Ive tried ball joint tool and 20 ton press upper will not budge.

any pics of how your trying ?

and some times I get good pressure on joint with b/j press and them 3-4lb hammer wack the knuckle and it helps pop it loose from its grip .

pics tho incase your setting it up wrong .

Ive stepped away for a while for a bday party. I tried pushing on the threaded part with a spacer and cup on the bottom to allow the joint to push through using the ball joint tool.
Using my press i used a spacer smaller than the hole in the knuckle and the cup with a hole large enough for the threaded part to fit through and a deep impact socket on top. Using that method i smacked it with a 4 lbs sledge and no dice either. .right now its sitting in thr press with slight pressure being soaked with pb blaster.

yep the walk away and go back later method helps lots of times for a clear mind and then OHHH that was the problem pops right out at ya .

The smoke wrench is your friend.

Heat it up and let it cool a couple of times. It'll come out. I had a nasty one once and all I had was a propane Bernz-O-Matic torch - and even with it's puny heat, I got it to work after four cycles of hot-cold-hot, etc.,.

My SMH moment the first time I did ball joints was trying to push it out the wrong way. Think it was the upper too. Did I ever feel like a jackass, just glad no one witnessed it. :doah:

They both go out to the center of the C. Top goes down and bottom goes up.

So thats what the snap right on the bottom one is for. All the other ball joints ive done came out same direction. You have to get the top one out before the bottom.

Use MAPP gas, it's about 1k* hotter

This was one of those: "Cr@p! I'm 2 gazillion miles from town, it's Sunday morning, all I have is a propane torch and a match, and I'm outta beer" moments.

I make sure to schedule my breakdowns on a rigid schedule now. I have to actually be parked in my shop, it has to be 65ºF (as a minimum) at least and sunny out, with no sign of rain. Oh - and I have an oxy-acetylene torch set - with full tanks.

NOTE TO SELF: Don't forget to fill the oxygen and acetylene tanks.

Yeah duh moment on my end too. I popped the bottom ball joint out find and dandy. And tried to reseat the top joint cuz it cocked sideways a bit and it pushed out. I could have sworn it was supposed to go the other way.
On another note anyone know where to get a new clip for the bottom joint and where to get new studs for the hub to the knuckle.
