ok, so my new-to-me bellview-warn winch needs a band brake liner. i know there's only one source for parts for this winch, but i wonder if band brake liners are generic. kind of like how you can go to a parts store and buy bearings of different sizes - not application specific.

where would i check into band brake parts?

I have that same style winch. Including the missing brake lining! I haven't found time to get it mounted, therefore I haven't looked into replacing the lining yet. I rebuilt one of these for my Boss a few years ago, but he ordered a replacement part. I will check into this next week and compare materials, but here is what I have found so far.

thanks for that link. what do you anticipate using to fix the brake liner to the band? or do you fasten it to the drum? either way - how do you plan to fix the liner to the machine?

I think there is an adhesive to bond the liner to the band. I will check out the other winch Monday when I go back to work.

I'm now even more unsure of the lining material, and what is used to bond it. The lining strip is 1.25" wide and approx. .175" thick. I don't see any material that is comparable in the link previously posted. The lining is bonded with a black colored adhesive that cures hard. It doesn't seem to be very flexible.

I sent a email inquiring about replacement parts. Here is the contact info:

wow. that's quite a pricey part! guess you wouldn't sell many of them tho! Thanks for checking in on that - I REALLY appreciate it. I'm going to start a tech thread on this winch soon - I'll let you know when I do.

BTW - I regularly travel up to Portland - we should meet up sometime. I am coming up this weekend, but I don't have time this time around...

Colby, find a good brake parts house or clutch parts house that turns rotors and drums and service type work. No a mechanic shop, but an actual parts house. They should be able to relign the brake band with new lining. I used to work at a shop that did this and so I religned alot of bands. The way we did it was to clean and paint the band, use a template to drill holes in the band and rivet the lining on as well as use a 2 part epoxy on certain bands. I don't know how to determine the correct thickness, as I just did what the boss told me to. The shop that I worked at was:

Reno Brake Inc.

Give them a call and ask what they can do for you.
