Went for a pm ride, weather nice. Made a turn and on it as usual, a little off the pavement, back on an bang thump bang etc. sounded like a driveshaft banging the ground.

Took a quick look and nothing obvious.
Limped on down the road to the next stop sign thump bang thump bang.
Coming to a stop got a load bang.
Got quiet from then on unless on decelerating and bump bump bump.

Limped Home about 4 miles
Found pinion 1/2 of 1 tooth laying in bottom of case.
Not bad for the original 12 bolt. Held up well considering what it's been thru.

I've got a 14 SF needs to be put together with an eaton posi.
Spring perches and shock mounts are already cut off.

Nice machine marks on the case. I pulled my 12 bolt at 147k for the 14 SF.

Once I had it out, found it had a ton of play on the pinion bearing and the oil looked bad. Was only months from pulling it out involuntarily

i would just buff off any sharp edges and seal it up and refill sith super thick gear oil . . . . then see how long it lasts .

for real tho . . . looks like some bearings are loose and its letting the carrier or pinion bind up on the other . notice the gear marks in the carrier its self . . .

It's worn out for sure. Had plannned on rolling with it until I get the other axle together.
I usually don't go far or carry a spare tire anyways.
Takes me a while to get things done these days.
Of course the weather is perfect right now for cruising.

Cruising to your local salvage yard--like I did today!..
66 degrees and not a cloud in the sky,and 1300+ junk vehicles = a good day!..

Would have been nice, had to work tho.
This is and fall is my favorite time for it, summer have to go early or I want to fall out.

Yeah, this time of year is best for boneyard jaunts...the wasps haven't woken up yet,and the snakes are still hibernating, and not that many big creepy spiders around yet...and it wasn't 100+ degrees in the blazing sun..

All I saw yesterday for wild life at the boneyard was a few frogs, some pollywogs in puddles, and there was families of chipmonks and squirrels living in some of the junk vehicles..I swear more animals are in that salvage yard than the state forests and sanctuarys around here!..(and everyone says junkyards are "poisoning the environment"..:surepal:)..

Pretty similar way my 12bolt died in my old 75. I was heading out of my neighborhood for a snow run rolling at about 15 mph when BANG! Sounded like a shot got fired when it let go. I stopped and looked under it, like you nothing really looked out of place. Making our way a few miles to our meet up point and it growled more on decel than it normally did. Got to the gas station to meet up and topped off the tank. Went inside to grab some drinks and came out to find an ever expanding lake of 80-90w oil flowing under the truck. Looked from behind and found what looked like an exit wound in the diff cover. Pulled the cover later to find two pinion teeth in the bottom of the case.

Did you drive it back to the casa wounded just out of spite?

Damn right I did. Piddling a trail of gear oil like Hansel & Gretel right into my driveway. I figured I couldn't screw it up any worse. The quicker I got it back the more oil it had to run in. Besides the hole was only a inch or so below the fill plug. The stain in the street took a couple of years to wear off. I powerwashed the driveway to clear the evidence from it.

I've done that to a 14b SF. I went from 4x4 to 0x4 in 10 feet. My truck had a strange noise, one made from the front driveshaft spinning inside the slip yoke. When I found that out the rear was spinning and the front wasn't. 10 feet later the rear went BANG then didn't spin any more either. It was a bad day.... it did, actually, get several orders of worse from there - and that all happened in my driveway, 20 feet from my house (to give context to worse)

my goc lock is on its last legs, however before i found that out i had put all new bearings, welded the tubes and put all new brakes etc in. Im considering a locker for the 12 bolt even though its not the best axle around just for that reason alone.

I had a 14 bolt with a gov lock that did something like that. No noise or anything when it broke, just too many one wheel burn outs from gravel to asphalt. I was heading home from school one day and it was making noises and when I got out something smelled hot. It had a little exit would and lost all the oil. I pounded the hole shut with a ball peen and filled it with oil and took to work and had a guy put a tack weld on the hole and then I just kept on driving it until I sold it.
