cooler line port in/out info http://www.tciauto.com/tc/cooler-fittings

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

cheep decent unit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATM-2640/

digital read out fancy http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATM-6549/

then use this in the pan after you drill a hole and mount it. also good time for filter swap. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-80250/

then if you want in line go this route. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-80212/

and for ultimate option spin on filter kit with temp sensor port in the top . so you can extra fine filter your fluid and watch temps . http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-80277/

there is also these nice small but vary efficent coolers from b&m

small http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70273/

med http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70266/

large http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70274/

and if you want full auto and no gauge swap out the stock cooler and put this in its place.

big cooler http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70297/

little cooler http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70298/

also you still need the stock cooler as fluid to cold is not good for the tranny also. best for cold weather area;s up in northern country . here is a nice simple temp control valve thats automatic for flow control of hot fluid to cooler. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DER-13011/

Thats good info for 700r owners! Another option I would add is what I consider the ultimate cooler on the market. I had a stacked plate cooler with a fan on my old tow rig as well as a big b&m stacked plate cooler on my wheeler and they didnt compare once I switched to a tru-cool 40k gvw cooler. My 700 runs much cooler now even without a fan.

I got mine on eBay.

I was in my garage last night, amazing how much you learn over the years...I had 2 Tranny coolers about 12"x 8"...thought I had something!

They MIGHT make good p.s. coolers ....:haha::haha::haha::haha:

great thread & info, thank you!:bow::bow:

never toss even a little cooler.

and your welcome on info. i see lots of people here and another site i am on a lot asking for help and figure now i can just link 1 page and be done :thumb:

I have the 8x11x1/2 cooler on my K5. Without a fan, running the cooler alone w/o the radiator mounted one, it works great. My gauge sender is mounted on the outlet of the tranny cooler with a pipe T so it gets good flow around it. I believe it is a 3/8" street tee, but I'd have to look at it to make sure. Hard lines bent up and around my radiator. I'll try to get some good pictures of it and my power steering cooler mounting tomorrow. I've got the Summit Racing cast aluminum pan on my 700R4 also, and plan on drilling and tapping a spot to put a 2nd temperature probe in the pan and have a switch to see what pan temperature is compared to fluid exiting the cooler. :waytogo:

My 2wd 454 Burb has a factory oil cooler and aux cooling fan in front of radiator, where's a tranny cooler able to fit? Is the only option one of the cooler/fan combos, mounted to the frame rail under the truck? Or will there be enough air flow behind the bumper?

best part of fan assisted cooler mount almost anyplace.

i prob would NOT mount behind bumper tho just for a drivability reason if small fender bender. thats why ford stoped after 1-2 years putting oil filter in left front wheel well :doah:

A deraie atomic-cool stacked plate cooler with the electric fan will just fit between the condenser and grille on the passenger side. I had to fiddle with the brackets and mounted it to the core support with some aluminum stock. It has a thermal switch built in. I run the fan with a relay triggered on the ground side by the thermal switch. The switch activates the fan at an ATF temp of 185 and cuts it off at 165. This cooler is in line after the in-radiator cooler.

I had a 3/8 npt bung welded on to my trans pan the last time I had it off. I have a 3/8 npt male to 1/8 female adapter in the pan. My temp probe screws in to that. This way I have a pan drain and a place for a temp probe.

I just use a cheap auto parts store temp gauge mounter under the dash.

I also have a factory engine oil cooler mounted in front of the condenser on the driver side.

hmm...those coolers I have may be fine after all...

my 86 700r4 started going out at about 186k miles...not bad for an 86, with no cooler....

my 99 4l60e has 224k miles, with no cooler & it's running like a champ...

My replacement 700r4 for the 86 is a "warmed over" 89...rebuilt by a friend in the local Boy Scout mafia...it WILL have a cooler on it...:waytogo::waytogo:

I have a dual circuit in series with a six pass cooling my 4L80e, with the single pass circuit cooling PS fluid. I selected this style because they are more transparent to the air flow. I have not seen trans temp over 180* since.
these don't need the air purged from them like plate style coolers.
