I want to move my battery to the firewall so I can do some core support trimming. I've ordered a box that bolts to the firewall using 3 vertical bolts per side, how much reinforcment will I need on the inside of the firewall? Big fender washers enough or should I use larger pieces of metal?

This is a single battery, not dual.

I would say large fender washers would be fine. Just make sure everything is tight so the battery isn't bouncing around and trying to tug the box off the firewall.

I would wanna see the battery box.. it isn't really the weight per fastener, more so the fulcrum point.. how the weight is distributed across that panel.. not that it's gonna pull-thru, but it may distort that panel...

my dual grp #27 has a large footprint, 1/8" back plate to the box... it has 3 studs (bolts and fender washers welded in) across the top, and 2 on the bottom...

correct... factory heat will not work.. just another excuse/reason to ditch the monstrosity and go with a summit heater...

of course it brings me to a somewhat blank page... is it the #34 flat back one?

item # OP3405

if so, I'd say you'd probably be ok with fenders.. is it just the 3 across the top? i'd run a couple down at the bottom too (EDIT.... looks like the battery might be in the way, thats why i added a lower lip to mine)... be aware, the top maybe 4 or 5" of firewall gets you into the upper cowl drain, not inside.. no biggie.. just sayin.. that bottom piece really helps stiffen the firewall panel..

if your feelin randy, cut out a couple strips of flat stock for the ones inside.. if ya go fenders, just spy it for a bit to make sure it's not bending...

Crap, figures...

It's actually OP3407, it's a rear mount, single Optima tray. It's got a vertical lip on each side of the "box" that utilizes (3) 1/4" bolts, nothing that I can see across the top or bottom.

I thought about some flat stock but was worried it might be silly overkill.

well, that might be ok.. but i would be WAY more likely to add the flat stock using that one...

i just like the way a large flat panel displaces the load..

Will do. Thanks for chiming in, I was hoping you'd see this since you have a firewall box. :thumb:

At some point I'll add a Mohave type unit to it but winters are so short and mild here it's not super important. I'll need it more for the defroster option than anything.

sweet... another perfect candidate for this mod..

The battery box will also make a nice cover for what I predict to be an ugly firewall patch. :doah: :rotfl:

I'll be doing this soon for my batteries and ditching the heater completely on my truggy.
