I don't drive my Blazer nowadays as much as I like. I wanted to make sure I don't drain the battery while it sits and have a surprise one day when I actually need to drive it.

Has anyone installed a battery cutoff switch and if so, what kind?

yup I bought one that clamps on the battery terminal then the battery cable clamps on to it. It was like $5 just spin a knob between on and off :D

how bout you elaborate on that.... what brand.. how many amps....

I was gonna do the same thread.. but wondering what all yall winchers are using... as i am going to need something good to 500 amps... :haha:

New one..

They have a newer version of the "knob" style switch, that has a small wire and a fuse,so your radio and computer wont lose their memory while its in the "off" position..only thing that sucks,is if you forget to tighten the knob first before starting, you pop the fuse! :doah: ..

I'm not sure how many amps those terminals are rated for,but I bet they wont take 500 amps for any length of time..Being cheap,I just take one battery cable off myself,if I'm worried about something draining my battery..

I have one mounted on the floorboard of the 83 K20 that I picked up last month from a local fire department. It is a nice bit of insurance against the battery running down when the truck is parked for a while, and also serves as a quasi-theft deterrent.

On the downside, I have no idea how it was installed. :dunno:

If you like elaborate (read that as "expensive") Flaming River makes an awesome one that is tough, and has a long extension handle you can mount in the cab and disconnect/reconnect the battery at will. I think it's like $125, but I've always wanted to get one.

Check in some boating catalogs, they have some nice switches. Summit and Jegs also have cut-off switches.

I just found a Hella cut-off marine switch on eBay for $8. It's the Hella model 87181, rated for 1000amps/12v. Maybe I'll give that a try. If I have to open the hood to use it so be it. It has a key that removes also.

I am using a marine battery switch that doubles a my dual battery manual isolator. Got it locally and it only cost about $40

It is good for 300 continous amps and I think 700 short amps and around 1000 peak amps.

(Glows in the dark too)

That's the one on my Sub too.

I have one of the Hella's with the removable key for the Dune Buggy. Doesn't look like it will get installed. Perhaps on it's Baja replacement. Have a second for the Project: Rusty. That key will BE the IGN key - goal for it is simplified wiring.

I installed a battery maintainer in my K5.

Picked it up from NAPA for about $30. Cost more than the switches, but it keeps the battery fully charged and ready to go. I have yet to suffer a dead or frozen battery since I started using it.

Of course that means you have to plug it in.

Couldn't find the NAPA number, but here is a similar unit from J.C. Whitney for $20
