Battery relocation

Nice job. I was wondering how far into the wheel well they extended, but it looks like they are completely out of the way. I need to add this to my rapidly growing project list. Thanks for the extra pics.

I was going to put mine on the floor in the same location in the marine boxes... I kind of like your idea though... Do you have a top to go over them to seal them from the cab?
 
Not yet. I might find time to do some lids this weekend. With the truck topless I'm not worried about fumes or anything at the moment...but it definitely needs some sort of lid.

It's not the most technically correct, but what you can do is run a ground strap from the same bolt your current strap attaches to the frame with, to the block or starter. I've seen that done with good results.
Given your location you may want to take steps to prevent corrosion btwn the lugs from occuring.
 
I called a local welding supply shop and quickley realized I had no idea what to order. What size should I ask for? I saw a recent post saying 3/0, is that a size of welding wire? Not gonna lie, I am clueless here.
 
I used "1 guage" fine strand welding cable. Prolly best to just go to one of those places in person and have a look at the cable they have. Regular battery cables have pretty coarse wire strands, welding cable the strands look like copper hair they're so fine.

Im not a guru, but with wire guage, the smaller the number, the bigger the wire. When you get to zero, then the next bigger size has increasinly large numbers in front of it. Hence you have 0, 2/0, 3/0 (increasing in size there, starting with 0 guage) I think stock-like battery cables or like 4 guage or something. 3/0 is probably overkill... at some point you probably have more wire surface area than you do battery terminal-connection surface area. There is going to be diminishing return at some point there...

If you have a 1" body lift you can put the batteries under the cab behind the transfer case. If not, you can move the batteries back more and put them where the rise of the floor is for the rear seats.

I put mine under the passenger seat where the saddle tank normally goes.
 
With the batteries mounted under the truck do you have issues with mud/debris getting all over them? How about water crossings? Any issues there?
 
I've probably had them submersed ten times or so. Caked in mud more times than I care to remember. If it's stuck on there real good I use a tire brush otherwise I just hose them off.

I suspect if you got them hot from heavy winching or whatnot and then stuck them in cold water they'd probably suck in water through the vent but I don't care. I put $62 wal-mart cheapies in there.

If you're fording water all the time it doesn't matter where they are, they're going to get soaked. I consider anything less than waterpump deep a mudpuddle though.
 
I may have to look in to that idea, I kind of have it barely rigged up under my hood now since the battery tray ripped out of the fender last weekend.

I bought two 73-80 battery trays (I think they're $17 each from the stealership) and built an angle iron tray to support them. That way I had the factory way of holding the battery in place but had something far stronger to actually hold the batteries in place.

The battery leads actually ended up shorter is the funny part.
 
Not a bad idea, I plan on running dual batteries as soon as I can put in enough hours to buy winch. Your idea seems like an economical way to get to accomplish that for sure.
