a guy at work is moving and asked if I was interested in a WARN winch he has had for years. its an 8000lb 8274 model WARN winch. I also got with it the remote, a heavy duty piece of chain, the links are either 1/2 inch or 5/8, its a heave duty piece of chain, three shackles, the base plate the winch is mounted on, and some tire chains which I dont need, but took anyways. he also has the manual he still is going to give me. oh and the fair lead.

paid 150 for it all. the power and ground leads are in good shape but the switch to motor wires are a bit weather checked.

probably will replace those wires. OFFROAD EXPO is coming in October so I will pick up a new synthetic winch rope and safety hook. he said it works fine but I have yet to use it. I work with him directly so I know he would not stiff me. I hate buying used stuff but I figured it was a good price and I could not pass it up.

I would prefer a 12000 winch for my K5 but for my light duty offroad burb or a utility winch I figured, hay why not. I dont know my winches, did I get stroked, what do you think??

I have to say i think you got a badass deal ... usually see them on sale for ebay and craigs for $350 or more, without all the goodies you got.

and they seem to look a little worse for wear too.

Grats man hoping to find a deal like that soon myself for my K5:bow:

150 for an 8274 is a killer deal even if it needs parts. I have been watching these around 300 to 400 in working condition. This winch would be plenty for pulling your K5, especially if you get a snatch block for doubling. My dad ran one on his 3/4 ton Furd for years and that would drag his Furd all over the place, usually when he didn't want it to. They are a great winch and you got a killer deal.

haha

i got a mile marker 12000 k that broke them bars off too.. wasent watching it spool in and got the wire rope wrapped to large in a spot and popped them off.. been working fine though with out them

That 8274 is my favorite winch.. i got the old version of it the bellview with just power in and its FAST!!! and holds lots of line.. and pulls my 1 ton ford around good

AWESOME! thanks guys! I have read threads and herd of the 8274 and how good it was. when I told him I would buy it, I had not even seen it yet. he could not remember what model it was at the time. when he brought it to work so I could see it, and I saw "8274" I thought I could not pass it up, but I still was not really sure.

glad I didn't let another bud talk me out of it. he was saying not to and spend the money on parts for my K5........well this IS parts for my K5 :D

so I can still get parts for it, they still make that winch???

8274's are the shiznit. Google on them ... you can put a motor off a Warn 9000 in them as an upgrade, and Billavista's got a great rebuild article.

(There's also a crazy Aussie company selling *dual* motor upgrades and stuff, way too much $$$ unless you're in competitions, but cool to read about ;) )

I had one on my 88. The truck was just under 7000 lbs. with a n 1/8 steel floor and heavy roll cage. Never had a problem with it even with 38's buried in thick mud. Great find! Good luck with it!

Yeah, way under rated winch. Easy to rebuild, as stated Billavista's article is great. I'm probably going to buy one of the new model motors for mine eventually. It is supposed to make a huge difference. (Like it needs it. :D)

Add one more vote for a great deal !
8274's are legendary in the real world of wheeling - they are not the strongest on the market but they are considered the "Bench-Mark" by most folks in the know.
For 90% of the trucks that actually go off road the 8274 is more than enough to get the job done every single time it is needed.

In the past couple of months i bought a rebuilt 8274 and a mounted but never used Warn 12k each for $600. The 8274 is hands down my favorite wouldnt trade it for anything, looking for another 8274 wont buy anything else now that I know. You got an awesome deal for $150 !!

If you still have your doubts, I'll take it.:D Seriously that is an awesome deal. It's what I use, same one for about 16-17 years.:wink1:

how can you tell if the winch need to be rebuilt? I like the motor upgrade plan, will look into that. Im going to read the Billavista's rebuild article too.

Mine had very obviously been sitting in someone's barn for about 20 years. I just figured it was better safe then sorry. Warn offers a couple of kits that will replace everything you need.

If Ward's gonna post one then so will I. :D
