My 454 has no dipstick. The capacity is 5 quarts or 6 quarts for a deep pan. How can I tell if I have a deep pan or shallow? The engine was equipped with an oil cooler if that matters.

Can you post a pic of your oil pan?

Here is my 454 in my 69 K20 with a stock (1989) truck oil pan. With it's external oil cooler I run 7 quarts.

Sorry I don't have a better pic of the pan.

Just go buy a dipstick and be done.

I would never run an engine without a dipstick! Some blocks have the dipstick hole in the block, others have it in the pan. Do some research and for sure get a dipstick installed. Running an engine without a dipstick is like parachuting without a ripcord. If God hadn't wanted you to know how much oil was in your engine, He wouldn't have invented dipsticks.

It is not in the truck yet.I would'nt think about running it without a dipstick. It is in the pan.If I buy a dipstick for my specific year/application,will it show me the accurate oil fill level

As far as i can remembr there is only one dipstick choice for a BBC as far as reading the oil level is concerned. There may be different length stick and tubes to bring the dipstick closer to the radiator support but still all the same from the oil pan down.

OK, I thought you were running the engine and wanted know how much oil to put in. When you said the engine had no dipstick I thought you meant it had no provision for a dipstick.

4X4HIGH is probably right, I went out and checked the three BBCs I have and they all have the dipstick in the pan. These engines are a '66' 396, a crate 454, and a 502, so they probably run the gammut of BBCs. I have worked on small blocks for many years and know that a lot of them had the dipstick hole in the block.

Sorry if I came off too strong.

the best level on dipstick is lipstick, wait, wrong question...
