BB04 Oct 1-4

I know the next weekend is when the toyota trucks are going to be there. so bikers might be better. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I would love to pull the 454 out of my Chev dually and stuff in a Cummins. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would love to come out this year. For first timers, is there any good info you can give me? How much does it cost? Do most people just camp near eachother? Do we all roll down the same trail together?

I would bet that Steve is working on the BB04 page now (where you can sign up). Now I cant speak from experience as this will be my first BB but it looked like last year that trail runs were setup in levels and you picked a level that you were comfortable with and everybody went as a group. I also believe most people that are camping are staying at the Slick Rock campground just at the north end of town.

Anybody else have any notes?

Signup fee was something like $30. Some of us stay at Motel 6, they gave us a bit of a group discount last year. That parking lot is also a good place if you need your truck fixed, but I suppose even they would frown upon the use of an impact wrench in the middle of the night... I believe most people stay at Slickrock campground.

There's some informal 'wheeling on Friday, with a meet'n greet plus BBQ and raffle at Friday night. Trail rides are usually in two groups, hardcore and somewhat milder; last year Saturday the difficult trail was Pritchett Canyon (rated 5) and the milder was Cliffhanger (rated 4.5; go figure!) . Typically, everyone is highly excited on Saturday, then Sunday the enthusiasm tends to give in to some exhaustion. Monday things peter out; last year we were just playing around a bit.

I found this is a cool group of people to 'wheel with, everyone looks out for everyone else, and nobody gets left behind. It is sort of expected that everyone is capable of fixing boken things and bringing their own spare parts, but ususally if there's a breakdown, there's lots of help available. Being well prepared helps a lot; things like batteries held down by bungee cords don't go down well and tend to significantly dampen the enthusiasm of the gang to help out. Rah-Rah attitudes like "get outta da way, I don't need no spotter" also don't come across very well with this group. I'm not implying anything about anyone here, just giving you my impressions that I got when I went to BB'02 and BB'03.

My game plan is to go again this year and try one of the hard trails but also stay away from the body damage stuff; a lot of us drive their truck to Moab and need them to stay intact to drive them back, so trail choice is a matter of reason. Nothing wrong with NOT doing the ultra difficult stuff, there's plenty of fun spots out there for K5s of every build level. Just gotta keep in mind that when in doubt, the rocks always win...

See you out there, michael

Sounds like a pretty good time. I got the ok from my wife. I will probably bring my Dad out since he is the best mechanic I know. He has been driving Blazers since the early 70's. He got me into this whole K5 thing /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif Anyways, he is a church going guy, so i was just wondering how much drinking and crazyness there was in the past. While it doesn't bother me, he on the other hand might not enjoy the company of a bunch of foul mouthed drunkards /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I definetly don't need to party while i am out there and would rather be sober and ready to ride the trails in the morning. I guess i can start acquiring some spare parts. Knock on wood, I haven't broken anything while on the trail. What would be some good spares parts to take. Just the norm, u-joints, fluids, duct tape /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif etc.....

I wasn't aware of any drinking on the trailrides; I'm on Diet Mountain Dew, if anyone cares; back in town may be another matter. I found this to be a civilized group of people, and usually there are a few Ladies with us; consequently, foul language hasn't been a problem. My wife will probably come along for BB'04; then again, Claudia is not among the faint of heart. This is not to say that its all choirboys, and you may hear a few curses here and there, but nothing excessive, mostly good-natured and typically as a response to some incident, as in body-rock contact, or something breaking.

I myself carry spare axleshafts for both ends, u-joints, tie rod, fluids, tools, jack, spare tire, belts, etc. For next time I'll try and get a spare rear drive shaft, and a few spring bolts. I'm trying to be easy with the right foot (btw, Dave, if you read this, I promise to stay out of trouble so I won't have to call for a strap all the time /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif), and hope the spares act as an insurance policy.

I believe drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited on the trail. As for around the camp last year we mostly sipped on a few and watched offroad videos on the couch /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif Nothing gets out of hand and there will be a couple people who don't drink at all I would imagine.

Moab is for the wheeling which is why I go to Vegas as well while I'm down /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

!!! I was watching those videos on the couch too, and we still didn't meet each other /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Yeah the trail is absolutely sober, no question, at camp there is beer drinking and such but no one gets out of hand at all. I don't drink at all and had a great time. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

That sounds good guys, basically a family atmosphere /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Maybe I can bring the wife and kids along......Nah /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Heck, I dont travel all the way down there to drink and party, I can do that at home. When I go down there, all I want to do is wheel and get the most out of it. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

You guys would probably leave me there after the crack incident.

To me, I think there is nothing like a Dodge on CRACK /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif
It made for some good fun /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
This is going to be a kick butt time again. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

My Dodge is on steroids now, so I can really get it.

I've got a triple shifter for the Doubler. Now I can actually use the modified shift rail. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I'm putting an Art Carr in it once the floor is in so the shifters are covered. It's about 200% less ghetto than at EJS.

And I've got buckets and 5pts for it too. It will be an entirely new machine.

It will be skinned out with the fenders, an aluminum hood, and the grille/headlamps. I'm hoping it comes in at about 4800 lbs, although that's probably a little optimistic.

It will still look like a Dodge just really narrow. It's 55" wide at the rockers and probably about 34" wide at the grille.

Here's the build up thread if anyone is interested:
