Most all of the trails will be led by fellow CK5ers. Metal Masher will be led by myself, Hell's Revenge will probably be led by a couple different guys, Fins n' Things is kgblazer5, Flat Iron Mesa - MrK5, Steel Bender - Chaddy, Pritchett - 38377k5, Area BFE is "self-guided", Gold Bar Rim is MrK5, Poison Spider and Wipe Out Hill leaders are TBD (any volunteers?).

All of the trail runs will start at 8AM. Meeting places to be announced.

Please e-mail me at [email protected] and let me know what trails you are planning to run. This way the trail leaders have an idea how many to expect.

The trail runs listed above are trails that some of us have volunteered to lead so that there are some runs setup for those that don't know the area. Anyone attending is welcome to run whatever trails they would like, these are not "mandatory" runs.

If you want to run something else, you are welcome to e-mail me and I can add it to this thread so that anyone else may join you if they would like.

Trail Requirements

Here's what I have from the trail leaders on vehicle requirements:

Metal Masher:
33" tires and at least one locker.

Steel Bender:
Steel bender basically requires a good working rig with a 33 inch tire. I would suggest taking a hi-lift jack and a spare tire.

Other than that, a cooler with water and snacks is always good.

Pritchett:
I'd recommend lockers front and rear with 35's as a minimum. Spares, a winch, straps, etc. are highly recommended.

Gold Bar Rim:
33" tires and at least one locker.

I also want to add some basic things that would be needed for all the trails.
  • Attachment points for recovery, at least one front and one rear - SOLID/STURDY
  • No leaks - minimizes damage to environment.
  • Vehicle in good operating condition.
  • Basic tools
  • Recovery gear
  • Fluids
  • Water for yourself and truck
  • Full tank of gas at the start of each day
  • CB radio highly recommended - it's saved me on Hell's and the side chatter on the trail is always fun
  • First aid kit
  • Spare parts - you know what's likely to break, make sure you have the spares.
  • Carb tuned for steep angles

I had some more questions on the trails descriptions so below I'm going to paste in some more info. This is stuff that jms did an excellent job compiling last year.

Hell’s Revenge (easy – hardcore). Moab’s
premier slick rock trail has been chosen for
the ‘Early Bird Run’ at Blazer Bash. Suitable
for builds from near stock to highly modified,
this trail offers slickrock at it’s best, and a
few hard obstacles to boot. Bypasses exist
for those who don’t want to risk their
sheetmetal e.g. in the Escalator. Make sure
your motor runs well at steep angles - think
Dump Bump - and your brakes are top
notch… Sand Flats Recreation Area fee is
applicable, IIRC $5. That will also get you in
to Fins n' Things & Porcupine Rim (plus some
others I might be forgetting.

Fins’n Things (Easy). An easier version of
slickrock compared to Hell’s Revenge, this
trail offers several steep climbs and just as
steep descents. Make sure your brakes are
in good shape. The trail consists of 3 loops
off of Sand Flats Road, which makes it easy
to get back to town in case you want to get
off the trail early. Sand Flats Recreation
Area fee is applicable - see Hell's Revenge
above for fee info.

Metal Masher (more difficult). From Hwy
191 north of Moab to the top of Arth’s Rim,
this trail features several slickrock areas
and some rough terrain, and a fabulous
view of Arches National Park from the top.
Ledgy climbs such as one through Mirror
Gulch demand attention to the correct line
and a reliable vehicle. The two big (but
optional) obstacles are Rock Chucker Hill
and Widowmaker, and Mother-in-Law Hill
offers several lines of varying degree of
difficulty on the way out.

Pritchett Canyon (hardcore). It’s only 4
miles, but make no mistake about it: they
are among the 4 hardest miles in Moab. The
entry is tricky, and obstacles such as the
Rocker Knocker, Rock Pile, Suicide Hill, and
Yellow Hill, are known to take a bite out of
vehicles quite often. Come well-prepared: 2
lockers, 36+ tires and a winch are
mandatory. Most importantly: make sure
your motor keeps running when the truck’s
nose points towards the sky. Trail use fee at
the entrance is applicable; last check it was
$2.

Area BFE (hardcore - and then some…).
Located about 14 miles south of Moab, this
privately owned area offers about every
hardcore rockcrawling challenge you can
imagine. There are a few easier trails in the
area, but famous hardcore trails such as
Upper Helldorado or Coyote will take their
dues from driver and vehicle, and you can
try to cut your teeth at the rockcrawling
competition course. Keep in mind: God
forgives, rocks don’t… and they rate Upper
Helldorado as one of their “easier” trails…

Poison Spider Mesa (more difficult). A
well-known trail up to the cliff high above the
Colorado River and Moab, it features
obstacles such as the Waterfall and the
Wedgie. Several steep rocky climbs with
ledges, high-speed whoop-de-doos up on
the Mesa, two sand pits, and expansive
slickrock make up the trail. The Arch high
up in the cliff offers a cool view of the river
far below, and we’ll pass the grave of a girl
that died from the bite of a poisonous
spider, thus giving the trail its name.

Golden Spike (more difficult). One of
Moab’s longest trails presents constant
challenges and well-known obstacles. 5
miles of Poison Spider Mesa, 7 miles of
Golden Spike, 4 miles of Gold Bar Rim, and
4 miles of Gemini Bridges Road make for a
long day – even without any breakage!
Obstacles include the Waterfall, Wedgie,
Launch Pad, Zuki Hill, Golden Crack,
Double Whammy, and Golden Stairs, and
demand well-built and maintained vehicles
as well as constant driver attention.

If anyone has any question about whether they are equipped for a certain trail, feel free to start a thread. It will probably help someone else out too.

Make sure you let me know if you plan to run any of the trails listed above. If there aren't enough people interested, some of the trails may be canceled. Which means you'll be doing the trail 'self-guided'.

FYI: Flat Iron Mesa will definitely run regardless. Well at least as long as I have one other person with me.
