I am getting ready to do an overhaul on my buddies Mom's 71 monte carlo with a 402 big block. I have not torn into it yet, but am wanting to order parts for it. We are gonna dress the motor up and throw an HEI into it as well. The motor is completly stock. What heads are gonna be on it? Oval or rectangle ports? I was wanting to buy an aluminum intake for it.

Large oval, unless someone has been into it before.
Check the casting # under the valve covers.

If the car is a factory big block car then the engine is a 454 NOT a 402. As zimmer stated the heads would be a large oval port unless someone was into the engine before.

If it is a 402 someone swapped in there, why not replace it with a 454?
