I got this pan with my engine, but no dipstick, and wondered how many quarts it is? Its about 8.5" deep, and about 10.5" long on the sump.

Anybody have one this size?

It doesn't matter how many quarts it takes since there is only 1 dipstick for a BBC so it will read correctly when full. Just count how many quarts you put in when you fill it with oil and then you'll know how many quarts to buy for future oil changes.

thanks Scott, maybe I should have said it better in the title. I was looking at having a minimum of 6 in the pan, and 1 in the filter. I just wanted to make sure I dont have a 4 qt. pan, if such a thing is even out there. I've heard some guys say a factory 6qt is out there. I could use a 5 I think, but would like to have 6.

I wouldn't worry about it, most BBC oil pans are a minimum of 5 quarts. There really isn't a need for a high capacity oil pan unless you're running a high volume oil pump or just want extra capacity to help with keeping the oil cooler. You could always make a remote oil resevoir and plumb it into your oil pan with a braided hose for extra capacity without having to worry about the sump being too big and giving clearance problems with the crossmember.

thanks Scott..I'll use what I got then.

Does anyone have an actual measurement for instance from the pan rail to the oil level? Maybe there is such a spec and I just can't find it. Cummins gives that spec in the book for their engines and it makes remarking a dipstick a piece of cake.

Pour oil in the pan while it sits on the workbench and once it reads on the stick you can make an appropriate mark on the stick if you so wish. Like i said, the FULL is full no matter how deep the sump on the pan is. The location of the dipstick tube in the pan is all the same so if the pan is deeper than stock it just won't read on the stick until you put enough oil in the pan. It would be a different story if the stick actually gave a quart number rather than a FULL mark.
