BDS or Skyjacker

Yep, you got it right.

BTW, ask for a price for ONLY the springs, no u-bolts, shocks, steering corrections, etc. Just the springs. Thanks man!

Anybody planning on checking out my homepage, forget it, I am still working on it!!!

I got a 5.5 BDS on my 85 K5 it rides alittle stiff but flexes very well. It's been on for well over a year and a half and no complaints. And on road it handles great.

Well Wes to be honest I have the 5.5" BDS springs and I think for overall performance... trails and mud they are excellent. With a shock like the 9000's it will be an awsome ride. I have riden in Skyjacker trucks and they don't ride bad... just a bit stiffer. Either one would be a good investment. Basically since you already have SkyJackers I'd say if you would like a bit more flex and a bit smoother ride go for the BDS. Any spring you go will sag a bit and over time so I really don't think you can really go into that... but Glenn at BDS says they will warranty any sag problems no questions asked anyways so what the heck.

Sounds good Mikey!

I was wondering about the sag problem anyways. I went out and measured the 85 with the 4" Skyjackers and then measured the stock 82 which has no motor in it and the difference was 3.5". I don't know how much more the motor would have squatted the 82 down to, but that did sound about right, you think? I am told the BDS actually sits higher than the Skyjackers too. Thats fine by me. Yeah, I'm looking for a better ride too. Figured with the 9000's and dialing them in, it should be better than the 85 with those crappy 5000's. How much am I looking at for a pair of front springs, if you know?

You heard right Wes... the BDS's sit nice and high when you first put them on and then settle a bout 1/2 to 3/4" to be right about what they are advertised. I can't remember what the actual spring itself cost, but should be in the Skyjacker neck of the woods.

Wes

Just for reference, I got four 5.5" BDS springs only without bushings or bolts (that's coming from ORD). The price in Canada was $699.20 which would be approx $450 in US dollars.

and the shocks. I am thinking of going to 9000's or Trailmaster SSV's VERY soon! I would be interested to hear what you say about the two if you go BDS cause I was thinking of getting maybe some Skyjacker for the rear... get a bit stiffer to sag less and plus it tows some. I also dont really want much flex out back anyways... I'm not much of a crawler or ramper.

But call up Ken's 4x4 and ask for Dave or else I believe Sean was his name... well anyways Sean has a sweet K5 lifted up 8" suspension wise w/ a BBC some 39.5 boggers and some body lift too... sweet rig, But he was a great help to me. Dave also has a sweet lifted mud bogger blazer that is pictured on their web page http://www.geocities.com/milnerlives_2000/blazer.htm

Ok here we go!! I called 3 places one of them being Kens 4x4. The othere 2 are here in Cali. First off, I dont know if you are planning on 1ton rated springs for the back, but if you are you have to go Skyjacker, cause they are the only ones that make them. BDS doesnt and they say the Skyjacker ones are REAL thick. Anyways. The first shop I talked to the owner said he used to carry Skyjacker, but he started haveing a bunch of problems with there parts, and he said there warranty is a pain in the ass to try to deal with so he dropped them and only has BDS now and has had 0 warranty issues like he did with the Skyjacker. He said they do alot of straight axle conv. from IFS and with the 4 and 6" BDS springs the customers are shocked on how good the ride is and how close to the stock IFS it is cuase mostly the ride is said to SUCK with straight axle anything. He said Skyjacker makes a GREAT spring, but thats it. BUT he said out of all of the springs, other than custom, BDS ARE THE BEST he has seen hands down. He named off a bunch of quality pluses of the BDS and says the are VERY well made (military wrap, instead of banded, teflon inserts and the end of EACH spring, etc.) For the 4 springs for your truck it would be $695 and ifu use BDS you use part#1608 for the rear. they are 56" but 3/4 ton and fit the same that is what all 3 places said they use on the 1tons.) Talked to this guy for a while, had some good info and some things I didnt agree with, but all 3 had certain things I dont agree with, but thats a differnt subject and had nothing to do with the springs or BDS. Damn the rear springs are $$ for your truck!

Next call(s) talked to them before real helpful and like BDS alot. Just got some prices from her. This place is the cheapest I've found so far. This is where I will be getting mine from. She is the one who told me about Skyjacker the only one making the 1ton rear spring and they are $570 for the pair!!!!! anyways, for the BDS front pair- $227 and the rear#1608 - $412 pair. $639 total. They will drop ship as well.

Next I called BDS to confirm they dont make the 1ton rear spring and he said no everyone just uses 1608 because he said to make a 1 ton spring it would be way to thick to ride or flex descent. He says you will be happy with #1608. Same lift and all just not rated the same as your stock 1ton springs, comprende?

Next and final call was to Kens. Nice guy and yes they're trucks sound bad ass!! One with 6"springs under a 10" modified suspension (this is the one on there home page) and Another '85 blazer with the 8" BDS and 3" body on 39.5 boggers on 14"wide wheels!! Oh yeah and a big block. Anyways, he really likes the BDS too. His price was front- $218 and rear $438 for a total of $656 and they will drop ship.
So there you go!!

So what do I owe for your time and efforts for doing all this work?

Yeah, all the lift kit companies build each spring to the same specs, whether you have a 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton. They do not build them 'heavier' or 'stronger' than the other. If you take a look in the parts catalogs, you will see the springs on the front are listed as the same part no. for all three sizes of trucks. My Skyjacker rears are also the same springs they sell and use for the 3/4 ton trucks, AND, the Suburbans. They do not change the spring rates for each vehicle. Thats what companies like Alcan or National Spring are for. They are the companies that 'tailor' the springs to certain vehicle specs according to the info you give them. BDS and Skyjacker just build them on an assembly line. No specific details for each spring.

Yeah, the 56" rear springs are not cheap. But for those you quoted at $570 for the pair, I will pass on that!!! Sounds like the BDS prices are going to be the way I'm going.

BTW, when these guys are saying they 'drop ship', are they still adding on to the shipping fee too? Or am I just looking at one price for the springs?

BTW, was those prices for just bare springs WITHOUT bushings? I dont need the bushings since I will be going with ORD greasable bushings, front and rear.

Anybody planning on checking out my homepage, forget it, I am still working on it!!!

Hey man you've helped me out PLENTY!!!

Just returnin' the favor

!!
The front you have a choice to get bushings and that was the price without, and for some reason the rears they said just come with them.
Oh and yeah you are right about all of the springs for 1/2, 3/4 ton etc. BUT Skyjacker DOES supposedly make actual springs rated for 1 ton and those were the ones for $570 a pair.
As for shipping, drop shipping means they will come directly to me or whoever, rather than to the dealer them to the customer. the first place was to my door, but he is in Cali also. And I just called the cheapest place back and she will fin out how much extra. She said she would ship it to me for no extra cost than to her. So if you are wanting these quick I could deliver them to ya! I'll let you know how much it is going to be for the shipping when she calls me back.

That would work fine with me!!! I checked out BDS site and the part no.s for the springs I need are #1551 for the front and #1608 for the rear.

Let me know of a possible date when you could possibly arrive. If this won't take up much space and if you don't mind doing this, I would appreciate it. Let me know man!
