Bead lock

I am trying to get the size of the bolts/screws used to bolt the tire bead to a wheel...


I am talking about the kind of bead lock when you drill holes though the lip, and literally bolt the bead to the wheel.

I know it's been discussed, but I never found out what size screw or bolt to use. Or to use a bolt or a screw, or a self tapping bolt.

I figured the bolts threads would be too tight to hold the bead to the wheel securely enough.

And I figured tightening a screw down throught the bead of a tire would be a huge pain in the arse . And I also figured you'd ruin the head of the screw before you could tighten the fastener all the way down anyways.

Now the self tapping screw would be the easiest, and would also have a decent thread spacing to securely grip the bead.... But I thought you'd most likely end up going straight through the bead, and get an air leak...

And if you went to a smaller fastener (the self tapper's) there would be less threads engaging the bead, so it would be worthless....


You guys see what I am getting at?? Or am I just talking out of my poop hole??

a performance shop will most likely have what you are looking for somebody makes a kit with the screws already to go moroso i think drag racers use this good luck

I used the screw in kind for years while I was racing. Till they outlawed it. I race circle track so we would hit stuff and shear off the bolts and they would cause flats for anyone getting one in their tires. They look just like self tappers, but are thicker and harder. After that we used SUPER GLUE on the beads and tubes. YOu can still peel a bead off but most time it pops right back on due to the tube inside. Lowest pressure I ran was 15psi but at nearly 85 mph in the turns and I never tore one off bead.

Keep in mind that they do it differently than dragracers...drag cars actually put the screw into the tire to prevent spinning the tire on the rim. This type puts the screw inboard of the tire bead (not actually through the tire) to make a lip that prevents the tire from unbeading.
